My kitten gets loose stool when changing food. What's next?

It's definitely good to get her to eat the Whiskas food, because this has necessary nutrients for a kitten that she may not get from the other food. However, the other food has good nutrients and is appropriate for a cat. They also likely taste better than the Whiskas, so that's likely why she is not eating the Whiskas. Getting a cat to eat a food that they don't want is difficult, but there are a few things that you can do to get her to eat. Canned food has a lot of moisture in it and may be too rich for some cats. If he likes dry and eats well, then he does not need canned food. The dry is balanced and healthy. If you want to feed him canned you may have to get a prescription formula that is made for GI health such as science diet I/D or Purina EN.

I would have Axl checked out by a vet first. Medical problems such as a GI illness and intestinal worms can cause the gas and funny stool. Unfortunately KMR isn’t a well balanced meal for him to consume after the weaning age (3-5 weeks of age), so it’s best to keep him in a high quality kitten food such as Royal Canin, Hill’s Science diet, Evo, Eukanuba or California natural by Natura. Your vet can run a test to check for malabsorption. This is something that can be treated. I would also recommend trying a probiotic for a few weeks to see if this makes a difference. Over the counter Culturelle is comparable to a lot of the pet formulated probiotics we carry in the clinic. Adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling), can also help solidify his stools. If all else fails then it’s best to go back to your vet to have a pcr fecal screening test, which is a little more in depth to check for bacterial infections that would not be detectable with just an in-hospital fecal exam. I am a fan of Royal Canin, so yes I would recommend switching your new kittens to all Royal Canin. It's a very high quality food, and because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff, you are assured the food is balanced to meet your kittens's nutritional needs. I would feed them according to the instructions on the bag. It could be one of your kittens has intestinal worms, causing its stool to be a little wet. These are common in kittens. Great question! Sheba isn't a very high quality cat food, so I'm not surprised Afro has been getting diarrhea from it. I recommend giving him Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams wet food. Those are excellent brands of wet cat food that may settle better with his stomach. If you do decide to switch to one of those, be sure to make the switch slowly to avoid any additional stomach upset. Mix the old and the new food together, and over a week, slowly increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until Afro is eating the new food only.

Cats, unlike dogs can eat only meat and be fine, as they are obligate carnivores. Dogs can actually be fed a vegetarian diet but cats cannot. If she was doing well on the previous food then transition her back if you want, or you can give her a little more time to get used to the new diet. You could even transition her to a completely canned diet. If you changed her abruptly from one to the other, that could be what started her problems, especially if she has a sensitive stomach. Since she's eating fine I don't think you need to rush her to the vet just yet, as long as she seems well otherwise. Decide what food you want to feed her long-term and transition her slowly from her current diet by offering her some of each dry food in two separate bowls for a few days. Then put 75% old food/25% new food in the bowl together for a few days. Then go to 50%/50%, then 25%/75%, taking a few days each time. Gradually reduce the amount of old food until she is completely fed the new dry food. If she gets an upset stomach, you can back up a step and hold there until she feels better. If she loses her appetite, starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, then do get her in to see your vet as soon as you can.
