My cat has stinky gas and soft stool. How can I fix her digestion?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 months and 9 days old | 7 lbs

My cat is very gassy. We’ve switched her to a high protein dry cat food (grain free) but she is still gassy and stinky. She passes gas at least 5 times a day. Sometimes she seems to let some stool out when she is gassy too and that seems softer than it should be. Also very stinky. I’ve never had a kitty be so gassy before. She doesn’t seem tender in her belly and will let us pet her. I’m worried about her digestion. Is there anything we can do to lessen her gas?

It's possible there could be something underlying such as a food allergy (protein sources can cause allergies in some pets!), or even something such as parasites or an infection causing excess gas. It would be a good idea to bring in a fecal sample to your vet to check for the most common causes of GI upset, and if nothing is found consider a food trial with your vet to rule out any possible food allergies that could be contributing.

Inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal lymphoma are 2 common causes of chronic diarrhea and thickened intestinal walls. A biopsy is the only way to confirm this 100%. However, there are trial therapies that can be started if biopsy is not an option. Sometimes these include hypoallergenic diets,
Low dose metronidazole therapy, vit B 12 injections, and sometimes steroids. I would recommend a follow up appointment with your veterinarian and discuss diagnostics and therapeutic options. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.

It is very possible the food is causing Mac some GI distress. Other possible causes could include illnesses, infections, parasites etc. A good first step is to bring in a sample of Mac's stool to your vet for an exam and to check for parasites/common GI issues. If he checks out OK, looking to switch him to a different diet or trying out a feeding trial with your vet may help if there is an ingredient he is allergic to. It is best to transition to new food over a period of 7-9 days, gradually adding in more of the new and less of the old, to avoid further GI irritation.

What food is best for my 7-month-old kitten with gas and loose stool?

I would have Axl checked out by a vet first. Medical problems such as a GI illness and intestinal worms can cause the gas and funny stool. Should he have one of these problems, the vet can treat him for it. If a medical problem is ruled out, brands of kitten food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, and Iams. Congratulations on your new kitten Cheez-it! I recommend to have him see the veterinarian who will check him for parasites and may recommend a medication. I would then recommend to try a different diet. I like Royal Canin as it is easy to break down and can often help with pets who are prone to gas and GI upset. Poor Rodney! You may want to try a probiotic mixed into his food once a day, such as Forti-Flora - this often helps with excessive gas. Another option would be to try a different food, as there may be an ingredient in his current diet that doesn't agree with him - there are companies like Natural Balance and Wellness that make limited ingredient diets that may be a better fit for him. If these things don't help, then it would be a good idea to have him checked by a vet to make sure that nothing else is wrong. Your vet may also recommend a prescription GI diet, or a hypoallergenic diet to see if this is more effective.

My new mom cat is gassy with soft stool after kittens, what to do?

Well, this is not terribly uncommon. If you are raising mom and babies correctly, you probably switched Diamond over to kitten food while she is nursing her young. This is often the cause of gaseousness and / or liquefied appearance of feces. With time, some cats more than others, the feces tends to refirm and the amount of gas returns to normal. You can try adding a product like Fortiflora to the food. This encourages healthy and quick probiotic growth in the gut. There is a canine and a feline version so be sure to grab the correct product. Raw diets, particularly meat, can cause bacterial infections such as E. coli and salmonella. I recommend stopping the raw food and seeing if that helps your cats feces. If it is still stinky it could be a G.I. parasite or infection and your veterinarian needs to do an exam.
