Blind parrot's eye problems worsening: Should I consider euthanasia?

The eye seems ulcerated and the cornea damaged. Immediate check up is required to give appropriate treatment and try to save the eye. Antibiotics eye drops and pain relief medications are required asap. Thanks for reaching out about Lucas. Without more information on the eye condition or the mediation used, a visit with an avian veterinarian is recommended. Intra-ocular cataracts are not uncommon, where the lens changes opacity. There is no treatment for this short of surgery, but usually does not affect blinking. Trouble blinking could be due to glaucoma, where the pressure inside the eye increases. Topical medication might be able to control this, but eye removal might be indicated. Good luck.

Unfortunately, we cannot prescribe medications over the internet without an in-person exam. If the eye is very swollen and has something stuck in it, it is best to seek veterinary care in person. They can examine the eye and prescribe any medications or treatments as needed. Until you can get to the vet, moving Aci to a hospital cage away from other birds to prevent getting picked on may help, as well as using a clean washcloth to remove any debris gently until the eye can be treated.

It's very difficult to say whether or not the eye should be enucleated. I would agree that Turbo is not going to be seeing anything out of the eye more than likely. If it is not causing him any pain and there does not seem to be any signs of infection, I would not say that it is an emergency to have it removed,. Ophthalmic surgery in a bird is not easy and not widely performed. However, if you begin to see any signs of illness, continued ocular swelling, significant discharge from the eye, or indications of systemic illness, at that point I would start to reconsider leaving it.

Thanks for reaching out about Coco. Keeping the eye closed could be the result of a trauma, infection, inflammation and other conditions. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. If not eating or drinking and weak, a veterinary exam is even more important, and quickly. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some comfort but is not a treatment. Good luck.

Rio appears to have an injury to the eyelid, which may explain why he is not opening his eye. This can result in swelling and discharge, which may be the liquid you are seeing from the eye. I am unable to see the eyeball itself, so I am unable to determine whether that is injured or not. I would recommend that you take him to see a veterinarian - your vet can look at the eyelids to determine if there is an injury there, and then can look at the eye itself to ensure that it hasn't been damaged in any way. They may prescribe antibiotics to control or prevent any infection, and pain-relieving anti-inflammatory medications. Please do not give Rio any human medications as they can be harmful to our feathered friends.
