My bird is blind and has a white eye. Can I treat it without a vet?

I think it's best to return to your avian veterinarian or even seek out an ophthalmologist (eye) specialist to see if the eyes can be saved or safely removed. They may be able to treat the remaining eye so that it can be saved, or suggest additional treatment to try and get Paco feeling better.

Intra-ocular cataracts are not uncommon, where the lens changes opacity. There is no treatment for this short of surgery, but usually does not affect blinking. Trouble blinking could be due to glaucoma, where the pressure inside the eye increases. Topical medication might be able to control this, but eye removal might be indicated. Good luck.

The eye seems ulcerated and the cornea damaged. Immediate check up is required to give appropriate treatment and try to save the eye. Antibiotics eye drops and pain relief medications are required asap. Andrea, I am sorry Rosa is not feeling well. Without an exam or diagnosis, it would be difficult to recommend any medications or treatment. Ideally, Rosa should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury. Once that is done, the appropriate action can be taken. In the meantime, keep her warm and as stress free as possible. Make sure she is eating and drinking normally.

But, before you decide to do anything or put anything in the eyes, it is imperative that a veterinarian perform a complete ophthalmic examination on your dog. There are so many different conditions that can look like cataracts or cause blindness that are not cataracts. And the good news is that a lot of our diseases in a dog are completely treatable; even sometimes with over-the-counter drugs. Hello. So sorry to hear that your parrot is having this issue. I strongly suggest you get her to an avian veterinarian for an examination. It sounds like she is having some issues seeing - she may be going blind. You need to have her vision checked with a vet this is competent with working on birds. If does not move, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Corneal scarring, corneal deposits (lipids, cholesterol) and other problems are psosible.
