My duckling's eye is damaged and blind. Does it need to be removed?

I think it's best to return to your avian veterinarian or even seek out an ophthalmologist (eye) specialist to see if the eyes can be saved or safely removed. They may be able to treat the remaining eye so that it can be saved, or suggest additional treatment to try and get Paco feeling better.

Ducks can be very messy, so daily cleaning of the eye may help keep it clearer, however if at-home remedies haven't helped, having a vet take a look for any injury to the eye itself and any infection is best. They can recommend or prescribe additional treatments as needed depending on the cause.

The eye seems ulcerated and the cornea damaged. Immediate check up is required to give appropriate treatment and try to save the eye. It is very difficult to say what it may be just by looking at some photos. My best guess would be some injury/inflammation to the cornea due to mild trauma. He would need an exam in person with a vet so they can use an ophthalmoscope to get a better look at the eye. It depends if the dead eye continues to suffer from an active infection, if it does it is advised to have the eye removed, if the eye is not painful and doesn't have an active infection most of the time then the eye does not have to be removed.

The eye is quite badly damaged and I would not expect it to return to normal. Chlamydia psittaci is an infection that can cause eye disease, but I would expect that the other eye or nose would be affected as well if this was the primary problem. My suspicion is that the eye was damaged by something. This often happens when they bump it into something or are fighting. The doxycycline is OK at that dose and rate. I would give this for only five days. You can help keep the eye from getting infected and help it heal by getting a good medicated eye drop from the pharmacy. A broad spectrum antibiotic/antifungal/antiinflammatory would be best. It's best to apply it to the eye six times a day, or as much as you can. Give this until the outside of the eye does not look red and swollen. Also, gently wipe away the crusts around the eye with warm water once a day. The eye will continue to have changes and will probably look worse and more sunken as time goes on, but they can adapt to this condition. If you are able to bring the bird to a veterinarian, they can offer other treatment options. I hope that helps and the bird gets better soon.

Thanks for reaching out about Lucas. Without more information on the eye condition or the mediation used, a visit with an avian veterinarian is recommended. Intra-ocular cataracts are not uncommon, where the lens changes opacity. There is no treatment for this short of surgery, but usually does not affect blinking. Trouble blinking could be due to glaucoma, where the pressure inside the eye increases. Topical medication might be able to control this, but eye removal might be indicated. Good luck.
