Whether your vet just prescribed something new or you're looking for a convenient way to fill an ongoing medication, the Petco online pharmacy, fulfilled by Vetsource, makes the process straightforward.
If your pet is already on a regular medication and you'd like to fill future refills through the Petco Pharmacy — whether for convenience, delivery, or Autoship savings — switching is simple. Here's how to transfer a prescription from your current pharmacy or vet's office to Petco, at your own pace. If you are a Petco veterinary services customer who has fulfilled prescriptions elsewhere, we can also help you transfer the prescription back, so your veterinarian has a holistic view of your pet’s health.
Transferring makes the most sense when your pet is on an ongoing medication — think monthly flea and tick prevention, a long-term allergy medication like Apoquel, or a chronic condition treatment. Rather than picking up each refill at your vet's office, transferring to Petco lets you manage everything in one place with home delivery and the option to automate refills in the My Prescription Page.
It's also a great option if your pet's current pharmacy doesn't offer delivery, or if you'd simply prefer the convenience of managing all your pet's needs — food, supplies, and medications — through a single account. We offer competitive pricing, Autoship discounts, and loyalty rewards through our free membership program.
If you are transferring a Veterinary Diet prescription for an item you need today, you can visit any Petco store with a Vetco Total Care hospital. Bring a copy of your prescription or order online to pick up in store same day.
Your vet will need to authorize the transfer or issue a new prescription. In most cases, Petco's pharmacy team handles reaching out to your vet on your behalf — you just provide their contact details.
Allow 5–10 days for vet verification, transfer approval, and first delivery.
Tip: If you're transferring from another pharmacy (not your vet's office), call your current pharmacy and ask them to fax or send the prescription details to Vetsource on your behalf — this can sometimes speed things up.
Once your prescription is on file with Petco, you can set up Autoship so refills ship automatically on the schedule that works for you — monthly for most medications, or every 3 months for longer-cycle preventatives. You can adjust, pause, or cancel at any time from your account.
When your prescription runs low on refills, Petco's pharmacy team will contact your vet to request a renewal as part of your next Autoship or refill order. You will also receive messages to remind you your prescription is expiring or has limited refills left.
If your vet approves the refill, the order processes as normal. If a renewal requires an in-person exam first, you'll receive a notification to schedule a visit — if you have a Vetco nearby it is a convenient option if you need to see a vet quickly. All prescriptions written by Petco veterinarians transfer automatically for easy fulfillment on Petco.com and do not require additional approval, making the process faster and easier.
If you go to the Vet clinic on file for your autoship order, Petco will reach out to them for two autoship cycles to approve the order based on your new prescription. If you visited a new Vet for your autoship item, you need to update the Vet Clinic information on your Autoship order page. This allows Petco to contact the Vet who prescribed the new prescription for approval.
The Petco Pharmacy fills prescriptions for dogs, cats, and small animals for most common veterinary medications. You can transfer any valid prescription with refills for these animals. A few things worth knowing:
Apply autoship promotional codes directly in the checkout page from My Autoship Orders. Do not create a new order as the autoship promotional code will not be applied on the general checkout page.
If you schedule a visit with your Vet and they write a new prescription, Petco will contact your Vet for approval and the order processes as normal. If you visited a new Vet for your autoship item, you need to update the Vet Clinic information on your Autoship order page. This allows Petco to contact the Vet who prescribed the new prescription for approval.
If you have a new veterinary diet prescription, you can also upload an image of the new prescription so there is no gap in refills on your profile.
If you have any questions about the transfer process, the Petco Customer Care team is available to walk you through it. If you are a Petco veterinary customer, you can also speak directly with the Vetco team about your pet's specific medication needs. Petco Customer Care Phone Number: 1 (877) 738-6742
