My pet's nail is bleeding after trimming. I used flour, is it okay?

As long as she is healthy with no underlying clotting diseases, her nail should stop bleeding on its own within 10-15 minutes with pressure applied. You can use a paper towel or rag and hold it firmly against her nail for 5-10 minutes to apply pressure and staunch the bleeding. I do not recommend trying to bandage the foot - bandages can cause more harm than good sometimes. You can try to reduce her activity today by restricting her to one area of the house (preferably without carpet!) so that she cannot run around. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Zena!

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

Yes it does hurt. i would strongly recommend having her nail clipped by a vet at least the first time so you can see how it is done. if the nail keeps bleeding badly you can soak it with pressure in flour or ground coffee. please do not try this again without having a professional showing you how to do it properly.

Flour is a great way to stop a quick from bleeding. Unfortunately, I've had to use that trick myself to get a quick to stop bleeding. When we hit the quick when trimming nails, the biggest problems are that it bleeds and it hurts. That blood can get underneath the layers of the nail (similar to when we have bleeding under our nails) which is probably why it is red. That may change to purple and look bruised in the next couple of days, but it will heal. The other thing you need to make sure when trimming Mona's nails in the future that you use treats or verbal praise to make sure she is comfortable for nail trims. Most kittens are pretty forgiving for nail trims, so don't worry about it, but make sure future nail trims are good experiences, so she doesn't start to dislike them. Congrats on your new kitten! No worries. Go to your local pet store and purchase a product called kwik stop. This will stop the bleeding. If they are not open then you can try turmeric powder or corn starch. Best of luck with your pet moving forward. Take care!

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia).
