My dog's nail is bleeding after a trim. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 8.8184904874 lbs

‏Please help me, I cut the nails of my dog and one of them came out of very little blood and at the moment i put the alcohol for it to sterilize Do I have to do anything else?Is there a danger to her?

No worries. Go to your local pet store and purchase a product called kwik stop. This will stop the bleeding. If they are not open then you can try turmeric powder or corn starch.

I hate to hear that happened. Accidents occur! If you don’t have any Quickstop on hand, use cornstarch and gently push it into the end of the broken nail. Continue to dab it into place until the bleeding stops.

Oh no poor Rambo! It sounds like your uncle cut the quick of his nail, causing the excessive bleeding. Get some styptic powder or cornstarch, and pour some into your hand. Dip Rambo's nail into it, and keep repeating if the bleeding doesn't immediately stop. If this doesn't work, you will need to take Rambo into the vet.

If you use styptic powder it will stop immediately. You can purchase this at a pet store, or get it at a pharmacy. Men use this to stop bleeding when shaving. Put a small amount on the bleeding nail and hold it on for a short time. I always have it when I trim toenails to stop bleeding if they get cut too short. You probably went too far down with the cutting. No worries as even if initially profuse the bleeding usually stop quite rapidly.
I would recommend to keep the area clean with salt water to avoid any risk of infection.

Poor guy. His nail is bleeding because the kwik (nail nerve) is exposed there. You will need to go to the pet store and pick up Kwik-stop styptic powder and apply it to the exposed kwik (pink area) underneath the nail to get this to stop. Petsmart, Petco or any other local pet store should have this readily available for you to pick up. If they are not open, any vet clinic will be more than happy to apply this for you, because every clinic has this in stock. You don't have to stop walking him, but perhaps he will need another application of the kwik stop if he starts bleeding again. Also you can try walking him on the ground (dirt) instead of cement, which should be less abrasive on his nails. : ) I hope that you can get Hobbes nail to stop bleeding soon. My cat's nail bled after I clipped it too short. What should I do?

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia). Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

Try dipping the nail in styptic powder or cornstarch to see if that helps stop the bleeding. If it does not, I would contact Poppy's vet. The blood loss won't be enough to cause any serious problems, but it should be treated right away if you can't stop the bleeding. I hope this helps!

Poor Tandy! If the bleeding has stopped, then an emergency visit isn't need. I would gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep her from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on her. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.
