My rats need new chew toys. What are the best and safest options?

It is not as critical to provide an additional chewing substrate for rats as it might be for other rodents, so if Roux does not seem to enjoy the sticks, you do not have to provide them. You might offer her another type of rat food made by Mazuri. This comes in a biscuit form that she might enjoy gnawing on. In addition, a treat such as yogurt or dried fruit treats manufactured specifically for rodents should be provided 2-3 times a week. If Roux has normal dentition, then the teeth will naturally keep in alignment. Hope this helps. Take care.

I have never heard of giving rats nylabones but a rat will chew on anything. I would likely advise to stick to toys/chew objects meant for rats. As far as it goes for toys for your boxer, stick to soft toys or rubber toys. I would not get anything with hard components as I would not want to damage her gums or remaining teeth (if she has any?). Nylabone does make softer toys but these break apart easier if she has any teeth to chew them. Kong products are good options too. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Peach. Rawhide bones should be safe for rats, as they are omnivores similar to dogs. You should provide small pieces to chew on as not not upset their gastrointestinal tract. Be careful as rat teeth are smaller and thin, and might fracture easier. Good luck.

I recommend to stick with toys meant for rodents. It's hard to know if toxicity is a potential concern but the small threads could become wrapped around his teeth. Many mice like to chew on cardboard boxes and toilet paper rolls. They also make wooden toys for rodents. The clear exercise balls and a running wheel will also be fun for Frankie. If there are any fruit trees like apple trees or pear trees near you, you could get some twigs into his cage for him to chew. Willow will work also. I realize that Israel is a mainly aried country, but maybe there is a kibbutz near you that grows apples or pears. You can use a pet safe sealer/varnish. Rats need to chew to keep their teeth from overgrowing, so be sure to provide plenty of chew toys so they don't turn to the wood. Do not use cedar, pine or yew as these can cause health problems. Allow an adequate drying time once the wood is sealed.
