Can my pet rat safely chew rawhide bones, and what size is ideal?

Thanks for reaching out about Clubs. Many of the commercially available products are fine but individual likes are different for rats. Wooden toys are good for chewing but can be unappetizing to rats. You can try making your own by purchasing untreated pine blocks, and panting/soaking for a few hours in a beef broth, to make appealing. Good luck.

I have never heard of giving rats nylabones but a rat will chew on anything. I would likely advise to stick to toys/chew objects meant for rats. As far as it goes for toys for your boxer, stick to soft toys or rubber toys. I would not get anything with hard components as I would not want to damage her gums or remaining teeth (if she has any?). Nylabone does make softer toys but these break apart easier if she has any teeth to chew them. Kong products are good options too. I hope this helps!

It is not as critical to provide an additional chewing substrate for rats as it might be for other rodents, so if Roux does not seem to enjoy the sticks, you do not have to provide them. You might offer her another type of rat food made by Mazuri. This comes in a biscuit form that she might enjoy gnawing on. In addition, a treat such as yogurt or dried fruit treats manufactured specifically for rodents should be provided 2-3 times a week. If Roux has normal dentition, then the teeth will naturally keep in alignment. Hope this helps. Take care.

Daisy is super cute! The decision to give a dog rawhide is always a tricky one. Some dogs never have any problems with rawhide while others get bad stomach upset from them. Some dogs can even swallow a piece that's too big and end up with an intestinal obstruction. Intestinal obstructions are serious and require surgery to correct. I'd monitor Daisy to make sure she doesn't bite off a large piece of rawhide and swallow it as this would make her prone to intestinal obstruction. Remove the rawhide when it gets small as she may swallow it. I'd also watch to make sure she doesn't develop any vomiting or diarrhea. If you see this she should be examined by a veterinarian and rawhide should no longer be given If you want to err on the side of caution then I wouldn't give Daisy rawhide in the future. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend the compressed rawhides for Gracie since they break up easily when chewed. You can find the flat rectangular ones or the cylindrical ones at your local pet store. She may be able to chew a regular rawhide but I would give her the smallest cylindrical ones. Good luck

Rawhide has been and is used in some toys. Most birds (mine included) ignore it. It can be chewed, but monitor to make sure Maxcine doesn't ingest large bits. I wouldn't recommend rawhide from the local butcher.
