Can I use a display cabinet for a rat cage, and is varnish safe?

Wooden toys are good for chewing but can be unappetizing to rats. You can try making your own by purchasing untreated pine blocks, and panting/soaking for a few hours in a beef broth, to make appealing. Good luck.

It would be safest to avoid all types of pine bedding. There are other options that are safer such as aspen shavings or any one of the recycled paper type bedding materials. The current bedding is fine to use as well.

I would try to avoid housing a rabbit on pine or cedar shavings as they can affect how the liver processes anesthesia/drugs (Care fresh would be a safe alternative), but having the rabbit in a room with cedar paneled walls is likely not an issue. Hello! A rusty cage is not recommended for a few reasons. First, your hamster could be exposed to heavy metals like lead and zinc that are components of cage metals. Animals are protected from these heavy metals by the powder coating that’s applied, but as the cage ages and the coating cracks and peels off, exposure can occur. The rust is an indication that any powder coating is old and compromised. Secondly, the rusty bars may damage your hamsters insicors and this could become a bigger issue if there is an incisor fracture or damage to the roots. I would recommend getting a new cage for these reasons. Hope that helps.

Cats will often scratch and ingest the dust from timbers and scratching posts as they groom their feet. This is completely natural behavior and is no concern with untreated timbers. I would be sure to use a non-toxic tree and would not use any sealers or varnish

Any wood stain an be used. A water based product would be safer than an oil based one. Sealing the wood after staining would be strongly recommended. Use a water based polyurethane sealant. Allow complete curing/drying before using the enclosed. The general rule is if you can still smell the paint/stain/sealant, then give it more time to dry.

Thanks for reaching out about your rat. Wire bars are a mild concern as their feet or legs can slip through, leading to sprain or even fractures. A solid bottom cage is preferred for rodents because of this. Good luck.
