My rat needs to chew. Are popsicle sticks safe for their teeth?

Wooden toys are good for chewing but can be unappetizing to rats. It is not as critical to provide an additional chewing substrate for rats as it might be for other rodents, so if Roux does not seem to enjoy the sticks, you do not have to provide them. You might offer her another type of rat food made by Mazuri. This comes in a biscuit form that she might enjoy gnawing on. In addition, a treat such as yogurt or dried fruit treats manufactured specifically for rodents should be provided 2-3 times a week. Cardboard tubes or rolls are safe and hamsters love shredding them or crawling through them. Popsicle sticks, when chewed, may expose a hamster to sharp splinters. For this reason they are not recommended.

The biggest thing you can do is spend time with them. Rats are very smart and they enjoy time with their humans. They can be trained to do many tricks. They like to climb. Offer them a variety of play things (from tubes, to a sand box to a climbing area) and switch things from time to time. I recommend to stick with toys meant for rodents. It's hard to know if toxicity is a potential concern but the small threads could become wrapped around his teeth. Many mice like to chew on cardboard boxes and toilet paper rolls. They also make wooden toys for rodents. The clear exercise balls and a running wheel will also be fun for Frankie. I have never heard of giving rats nylabones but a rat will chew on anything. I would likely advise to stick to toys/chew objects meant for rats. As far as it goes for toys for your boxer, stick to soft toys or rubber toys. I would not get anything with hard components as I would not want to damage her gums or remaining teeth (if she has any?). Nylabone does make softer toys but these break apart easier if she has any teeth to chew them. Kong products are good options too. I hope this helps!
