My picky rat won't chew. What's best to keep her teeth trimmed?

I have a pet rat and I have tried many different wood stick chewing products. She will chew on them only when they are fresh and she only chews very little. Her main diet is Higgins Sunburst Rat and Mouse food which has hard nuts and other foods. Will that be enough to keep her teeth trimmed down? Do you have any suggestions? She tends to be a little picky.

Hello, thank you for asking your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not as critical to provide an additional chewing substrate for rats as it might be for other rodents, so if Roux does not seem to enjoy the sticks, you do not have to provide them. You might offer her another type of rat food made by Mazuri. This comes in a biscuit form that she might enjoy gnawing on. In addition, a treat such as yogurt or dried fruit treats manufactured specifically for rodents should be provided 2-3 times a week. If Roux has normal dentition, then the teeth will naturally keep in alignment. Hope this helps. Take care.

Hello. The gnawing action of a rodents teeth will naturally keep them trimmed. Occasionally, due to a defect in the tooth alignment, an incisor can grow unchecked. These teeth need to be trimmed periodically. Teach you pets to allow you to examine their teeth & as long as they seem to "fit" or mesh together ( & we are only concerned about the front incisors ), they will be fine. Why is my pet rat not eating after I trimmed her overgrown teeth?

When you trimmed them at home, you may have cracked one of the teeth or made them jagged- this would cause her pain or rub on her tongue or cheeks.. Also, sometimes they have other teeth in back that grow long that you can't see. She needs to have a vet look at the back of her mouth with a scope to see what is happening in there and then give her some pain meds that are safe for rats. In the meantime, keep trying to feed her soft food like baby food, cooked egg, non dairy yogurt, oatmeal etc to coax her to eat.

My rats need new chew toys. What are the best and safest options?

Thanks for reaching out about Clubs. Many of the commercially available products are fine but individual likes are different for rats. Wooden toys are good for chewing but can be unappetizing to rats. You can try making your own by purchasing untreated pine blocks, and panting/soaking for a few hours in a beef broth, to make appealing. Good luck.

What should I feed my pet rat as she approaches two years old?

Hello. The majority of the diet ( 80% ) should be a rodent chow like Oxbow. The chow should be around 16% protein & 4-5% fat. Fruits & veggies can be offered at about 1 teaspoon per day. You can also offer a reasonable amount of nuts & seeds, also about 1 teaspoon per day. Vary the treats each day & Pika will be a happy, healthy girl. My rat makes odd chewing noises but acts normal. What's wrong?
