Why is my 9-month Yorkie puppy pooping less and eating less?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My 9 month old 7lb Yorkie is having fluctuations with pooping. One day he'll go a couple of times, and some he'll only go once if that. His eating is pretty normal but less time to time. Today he has eat some but not heavily, and only used the bathroom once early in the morning. I even have him some pumpkin. What should I do?

This seems to be pretty normal activity for a growing puppy. They tend to fluctuate with stools and also his food requirements are not going to be as much as they were when he was a younger pup (< 6 months of age). He should also only need to eat twice a day now and follow the guidelines on his food bag. Also, since he is eating less he will naturally produce fewer stools. Most pets by the time they are adults will produce 1-2 stools a day normally.
I wouldn't change anything that you are currently doing, nor would I be concerned that anything is wrong with Ollie based on this description of events. Now if he develops any signs of illness which include vomiting, diarrhea, and complete disinterest in food, then I would recommend taking him in to your local vet for an exam and treatment. Otherwise, continue to enjoy your pup who is steadily maturing into an adult dog.
Take care of that fur baby and remember to get him regular health check-ups twice a year to ensure he is in tip top shape. Best wishes!

    Poor Ollie! These are very concerning signs. If she's acting lethargic, vomiting, and not eating, I would be worried that something is seriously wrong - especially if this has been going on since yesterday with no improvement. I'm afraid this is really not a situation for home remedies - she really needs to see a vet right away to find out what the problem is.

    Some common possible causes of these symptoms in a young dog like Ollie would include parvo (if she isn't fully vaccinated), an intestinal obstruction due to something she swallowed, or ingestion of something toxic. She will quickly become dehydrated if she's vomiting and can't keep anything down, so there's really nothing you can do at home to help her - I would strongly recommend taking her to an emergency vet today. The vet can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment right away depending on what is found.

This doesn't really sound like an issue to me - dogs can sometimes change their behavior patterns when it comes to the frequency of defecation and it doesn't usually mean there's a problem as long as the stool appears normal. It is also quite common for the first stool to be normal and subsequent stools softer, particularly if the dog is exercising. As long as Oakley has a good appetite, is not losing weight, and does not have blood or mucous in his stool you probably don't need to be concerned.

Some dogs are not vocal due to their personalities. Others will take time to adjust and get comfortable in their new environment. It can be very stressful and scary for little ones to go to a new home, so it takes some time for their personality to shine. At 3 pounds, his stomach is not big enough to hold a lot of food. He should be feed 3-4 times a day to maintain the blood sugar. Once he is bigger you can decrease it back to twice a day. Stress and anxiety can also affect the appetite. Not every dog goes to the bathroom on that schedule. Take him out after he eats, then every 30 minutes to an hour until he gets good control and the concept of house training. If he is playing and stops to sniff and circle, then he needs to go. If you notice any bloody diarrhea or vomiting or he does not eat at all and seems weak, then i would get him checked right away

Most dogs only have one bowel movement per day and some only have a bowel movement every other day. As long as a dog is eating, drinking and acting normally, and seems to be having a normal bowel movement without straining, I don’t worry. As puppies grow, their guts mature. Additionally, different diets have different fiber content. Both of these changes can change the frequency of bowel movements. It sounds as though Harley’s bowel movement frequency is completely normal!

My 10-month puppy eats less but is active. Is it time for adult food?
If Teddy is still acting completely normal, eating his regular amount and maintaining his weight, I wouldn't worry too much. Some dogs will prefer to only eat once a day and do just fine. The 9 to 12 month range is when I normally recommend transitioning to an adult food, so you could start doing that and see if he wants to eat once or twice a day. If he starts losing weight, doesn't have the energy he used to have, or develops vomiting or diarrhea, I would be concerned there is something more serious going on and would have him examined by your veterinarian.

At this age it is expected for your puppy to eat less. Usually between 6-8 months of age puppies have less calorie requirement and will go from needing three meals daily to two meals daily. As long as she continues to eat dualy, act normal and is playful there likely isn’t anything to worry about. Best wishes and take care.

As long as he is on a good quality, large breed puppy food and is otherwise well, normal growth and a healthy, shiny coat I would not change his diet. The more variety he is offered at this age the more likely he is to develop into a picky eater and refuse foods regularly! Most pups will have a reduction in their appetite as their growth slows, or ha may have picked up a mild infection etc. Monitor over the next 5-7days a schedule a vet check if any further symptoms develop
