My new poodle puppy has black eye gunk. Is it normal tearing?

This will depend on the cause of the discharge. If Max has yellow or green discharge he likely has an eye infection or eye condition that needs to be treated by a veterinarian with medications suitable for infection or antiinflammatories, etc. If the "gunk" is just reddish tear stains, there really is no remedy that works 100 %. You cna try some 3% hydrogen peroxide on the stained hair if your dog is white. Otherwise just use a moist paper towel and regularly wipe it off as much and as gently as you can. When in doubt, have Max's eyes examined by your vet.

Some dogs can normally have a moderate amount of clear discharge from both eyes that can discolor the hair under the eyes a reddish-brown color. Keep Poppins' hair trimmed under her eyes and use a warm water washcloth to clean the discharge daily. However, if Poppins' eye discharge becomes yellow or green, causes squinting or redness to the eye, she will need to be examined by her vet.

Hello. I would not say that weepy eyes are normal for any puppy. It is a little difficult to say from the photo, but I get the impression that there is a little inflammation in the skin around the eyes, & maybe even a little hair loss. In puppies, this could just be a mild infection, or even the presence of demodectic mange. A simple skin scrape can determine if this is mange, & it is generally pretty easy to clear up. If this is the puppy you have your heart set on, then have the breeder take him to their veterinarian with the stipulation that all clinical notes are sent to your veterinarian. If this is not possible, then I would make some arrangement to take your new puppy to your veterinarian within a day or so of you obtaining him. You can discuss if anything is found, how much the breeder might compensate you for the cost of the puppy, if you like. Otherwise, he is a beautiful puppy! Hello, thank you for your question about Rupert. Based on the symptoms you describe it is possibly that Rupert may have a viral upper respiratory infection. If Rupert is otherwise acting ok and is not rubbing/scratching at his eyes I believe that it is ok to continue to monitor him. If the symptoms do not resolve or he develops any progressive symptoms I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, he's adorable!

He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I recommend to have Boogie examined to make sure this change is not related to an infection or other pathology. Otherwise use a moistened cottonball to clean the tears. There are also pet specific eye wipes like Angel Eyes. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
