Is my yard safe for a new puppy after dog died with bloody diarrhea?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | unspayed

We lost our mini dachshund last Friday and the vet didn’t know why. She was vomiting and had bloody diarrhea. We are getting a new mini dachshund in a week, as our other dog is not doing very well since the loss of her little friend. I am concerned that the new puppy may be able to get something from our yard whee the other dogs run and do their business, including the mini dachshund that just died. Should I be worried??

Hello. The biggest concern would be Parvo, but this is usually a very easy disease to screen for. Without knowing how old you other dog was, what diagnostics were run & treatments started, I cannot comment on why she died. As for a new puppy, they are all vulnerable to disease until they receive all of their puppy series at 8, 12 & 16 weeks of age. You may want to restrict the new puppy to an area of the yard not generally used previously & limit time outside. Keep the puppy away from any public areas, clean up after everyone defecates & I think all will be OK. I am sorry for your loss but hope the new puppy brings you many years of happiness. As long as Lola is only playing in your own yard with your other dog the risk for parvovirus infection is low. I would still recommend avoiding places like dog parks where you can't be sure of the health status of other dogs. My puppies have diarrhea and bloody stool. Can I put them outside?

Hello. If it is very hot in your area, then yes, it would be cruel to send them outside. In a hot, humid environment, a pup with diarrhea can dehydrate very quickly even in a shaded area. You really need to find out why all the puppies have diarrhea, & especially why the 2 have blood in it. The usual reasons would be intestinal parasites or Parvovirus. This will probably not clear up on its own, & if it gets bad enough can cause significant metabolic derangement to result in death. Is it safe for my 9-week-old puppy to potty outside in the garden?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She should be fine going out in your yard. There is a fine line between socialization, house training and exposing the puppy to infectious disease. Most of the worrisome disease are from direct dog to dog contact from sneezing/coughing or fecal-oral. I think your yard is fine. I do not recommend contact with other puppies or dogs are not vaccinated. Keep her up to date on her DHPP by getting it every 3-4 weeks until she receives 2 past 12 weeks of age. Is my yard safe from parvo for my new puppy after his first shots?

It is impossible to know for sure if you have parvo in your yard. If you know for certain that your yard has never had another dog in it, Taz is likely fine to be in the yard. However, if you don't know for sure, I would limit the amount of exploring Taz does in the backyard to play it safe until 1 week after his final vaccination. Is it safe to potty train my young puppy on shared apartment grass?

There is always some risk. Parvovirus lives in the environment for 5+ years so you can bring it home on your shoes any day. Certainly on areas where dogs defecate there can be a higher possibility if virus present, but as long as you are vaccinating at 3-4 week intervals then you are providing the best immunity possible. My puppy died from parvo. Can I safely get another new puppy?

Parvo can live for up to one year in the environment. I would not risk getting another puppy; an adult dog, yes. If you decide to get another puppy it is up to you but it would need to be FULLY vaccinated, meaning it is at least 4 months of age and has received 3-4 distemper/parvo vaccines at the proper intervals (3-4 weeks apart). Otherwise you are risking this new pups life.
