My puppies have diarrhea and bloody stool. Can I put them outside?

Bloody [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/) in a 10 week old puppy could be caused by a few different things. If he is behaving normally otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active and playful, no vomiting), then he may have parasites that are causing the diarrhea. [Roundworms](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/roundworms/) and [hookworms](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/hookworms/) are very common in puppies and can cause loose bloody stool. If he is not feeling well, laying around and not eating, then I would be much more concerned that he could have [parvovirus](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/parvovirus/) or another [serious illness](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/hemorrhagic-gastroenteritis/). Unfortunately, puppies can still catch things even if they don't go outside because we can carry in germs on our hands, clothing, and shoes without even realizing it. I would recommend taking your [puppy](https://www.petcoach.co/article/your-puppys-first-year-8-important-milestones) to the veterinarian for an exam. Submit a [stool sample](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-tell-if-your-pet-has-worms) to diagnose intestinal parasites. The appropriate medication can be dispensed or administered afterwards.

I'm sorry both your puppies are sick! I would be very concerned about parvovirus, especially since they are both having diarrhea. Parvovirus is highly contagious, and deadly. Even though they were vaccinated at 7-8 weeks, this one vaccine is not enough to incur fully immunity. It take three rounds of vaccines in order to incur full immunity. Other possible reasons include a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, or intestinal worms. Because of their age, the risk of parvo, and the fact that Bentley has had bloody diarrhea for three days, they both need to see a vet immediately. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

I would be concerned with Parvovirus which is highly contagious and often fatal if not properly treated. Given the duration of thee symptoms, however, it seems less likely. I would want to ensure, once well, they get at least 3 DAP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, plus rabies. Sometimes I will see blood in diarrhea from hemorrhoids from straining against soft stool. In this case, treatment for the underlying cause of the diarrhea will be needed. This could include some Metronidazole, a probiotic, and further deworming. In these cases it is usually a small amount of blood whereas with Parvo it is a large amount of very bloody, foul smelling stool.

It indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (so bring fresh stool sample), viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), HGE (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis), pancreatitis, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food. Oh no. I would take him to a vet as soon as possible and have him checked for intestinal parasites and parvovirus. Either one could be the cause of his bloody discharge and need to be identified quickly so that he can start treatment right away. Howver, you can offer Pedialyte non-flavored to help keep him from getting too dehydrated. It is unfortunate that a pet you just adopted is ill; however, you can't help Shiner on your own and you should allow your veterinarian to care for him and his illness from here moving forward.
