When can I safely remove the cone from my dog with ringworm?

There appears to be some good hair regrowth, but it could be infectious still. I've seen lesions that appear completely normal and still test positive for ringworm, so it is best to take her to the vet for testing. The test takes a few days, but is relatively inexpensive and is the best method we have for determining when to stop treatment. I hope that helps and all Juju recovers soon.

Yes, I would definitely put a cone on her, and take Evie into see the vet if she hasn't already. She will need anti-fungals to treat the ringworm, and any other animals in the house should be treated as well. You will need to disinfect your home as well. I would highly advise isolation in this case but I will tell you this, even shed hairs are contagious so direct contact is NOT needed to spread ringworm. Ringworm should be treated for at 1-2 months after all lesions are gone. I would retest Taco for ringworm to make sure it is completely cleared before integrating him. Good luck Also, ringworm is a Zoonotic disease meaning humans can catch it from dogs. Small children and the elderly, especially shouldn't have contact with him during the time of treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Izzy has one of the most frustrating dermatologic issues we face with our pets. Fungi are notorious for taking a very long time to kill or at least have managed. Unfortunately, there are multiple factors that contribute to a dog getting ringworm, and part of it is inate susceptibility that Izzy has. Inflammation of the skin will make skin infections of any kind more likely, so that should be a priority to get under control. There are shampoos available with a prescription, so ask your vet about them. Also, on rare occasion, oral antifungal therapy is warranted. This is less than 5% of cases from my experience, but if it is widespread on her body, it could be necessary. As she is susceptible, using a topical anti-fungal shampoo would be beneficial to minimize chances of recurrence once Izzy's skin has cleared-up. The itching needs to be explored further because it is what leads to skin inflammation and thus a higher chance of having an infection. Without being able to examine her, it is difficult to say whether the ringworm is under control, so continue to follow up with your vet as it can take weeks to months for it to clear up completely. Hi there! Poor Bosco, allergies are rough! I always encourage my clients to keep the cone on until they see everything at the point we want to get it-that is 95-100% better (general aim). If he has not progressed that far yet and the food hasn't had time to work properly (I am unsure by your post how long you have been on your diet trial) and you remove the cone it may all be for naught. I generally give the food trials at least 30 days. The steroids will definitely help and if your vet has given you clearance to remove the cone-you can always do it on a trial basis. If he starts scratching again-back on with it! Hope this helps!

Since topical medication hasnt healed the area up Cali may need oral antibiotics to help clear up the ulceration that is on the surface of her wart. You may also want to consider talking to your vet about having the mass removed since it is causing her some distress and staying infected. In the meantime the best way to help it heal and keep her from licking it is the cone. I'm sorry, I know she probably hates wearing it, and I don't blame her. I hope this helps. I always recommend having them wear the cone for 12-14 days. It can take this long for skin to heal by scar tissue. I would recommend at least another 5 or 6 days before removing it. Hope that helps.
