My dog's paw bump won't heal. How can I get her off the cone?

Poor Kong. This could be an infected area that Kong has been licking, a growth, or it could be where a small foreign object has gotten under his skin like a grass awn. First, you don’t want him to lick it so you can put a cone collar on him if needed to prevent this. You can try putting neosporin on it twice a day but chances are he may need oral antibiotics. Yes, I would get a cone. Be sure that the cone extends past the end of his nose or he will still be able to lick. This could be a serious problem. Bumps between the toes can be anything from a cyst, to a tumor to an abscess. You can keep soaking it with Epsom salts. You can apply the aloe but it's not likely to help; Neosporin would be better. I suggest you don't wrap it. If you bandage it too tight or incorrectly then you can cause more damage. If after 4-5 days he is not better you need to get him to the vet for an exam.

Hello, thank you for suing PetCoach. Most likely this is benign histiocytoma. I have linked an article for you below about this issue. Basically it is a common benign tumor that is typically seen in young dogs and on the extremities. It regresses on its own within a few months. No treatment is needed however, is some cases, giving Benadryl has seemed to make it go away sooner. For a 48 pound dog I would give two of the 25mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) capsules twice a day until you notice it reducing in size. Yes, dogs take a much higher dose of Benadryl than we do. I would not be overly concerned about this but we sure don't want her licking it so if her licking gets excessive, you will need to put a cone collar on her to stop that. At. This point, I would surgically explore that lesion. There may be a foreign body in there, there may be a small mass or tumor inside, but at least it should be surgically debrided. Debriding it will remove all of the dead necrotic tissue. It should be kept clean by doing daily bandage changes and your pet likely needs a different antibiotic. If this was a routine infection that was responsive to Cephalexin, it would be better by now.

Poor Cubbie! I am very concerned by looking at the photos that this may be a tumor that has become infected. I would have her rechecked or seek a second opinion. A topical cream is not going to do anything for this as the infection is too deep. Your pet may need surgery to remove this and an oral antibiotic to control the infection.
