My cat's allergies are healing. Is it safe to remove his cone?

It likely is just fine to take the cone off now. Cats are quick healers. However make sure you look at the incision site thoroughly for any areas that look troublesome and get them evaluated by your vet if seen. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Basil! I would call your Vet and ask if they think a steroid injection or steroid pills are appropriate. Based on your description I think the area is itchy and he will continue to scratch the area and open it up. I think some steroids will provide relief and allow you to take the E-collar off sooner. Otherwise I wouldn't take the E-collar off until the scab falls off, which could be 2 weeks or more. I hope this helps and I wish Basil the very best!

If he is continually rubbing on his chin with his paw when the cone is off, then I would leave the cone on for a couple more days. However, you do need to wash the cone with hot water and a mild soap (dish soap or hand soap is fine) twice daily, then dry it completely before putting it back on. Hi there! Our diet trials for patients with allergies can take a couple of months to show true improvement but usually around the one month mark the difference is noticeable. Make sure you are strictly following the diet trial and giving no other treats or food mixed in, as this will not give accurate results to your new food. Hope this helps!

Poor Riku sounds miserable at the moment, and I'm sure he hates having to wear a cone for six months. I'm not sure if he has seen a vet for his skin problems. If he has not, I recommend a visit to the vet first thing on Monday as he cannot spend his life in a cone. The vet can do a physical exam as well as blood tests to see if he is suffering from allergies. Should he have allergies, there are drugs that can be used to treat it such as Apoquel. It's an anti-allergy medication that works very well for dogs with bad allergies. Other causes of his itching include fleas, mites, and ringworm, and the vet can check for those as well. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am assuming Juju is on medications from your Vet for the ringworm. I wouldn't take the cone off until hair starts to regrow. I think it might be too soon. I highly recommend touching base with your Vet as well. If the ringworm was diagnoses off a fungal culture they may want to repeat the culture to be sure it is 100% gone. Ringworm can be very frustrating to treat and usually requires a lengthy treatment. The cone should stay on unless Jazmin has trouble eating or drinking. If this happens, it can be removed for mealtimes but should be replaced immediately afterwards. If you see her having trouble on the stairs, carry her up or gently raise her head to clear the steps. She will acclimate to the collar in a day or two.
