My dog has ringworm, licking fur off. Should I put a cone on her?

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is highly contagious and can spread if it keeps getting messed with. It is also usually treated with topical medications and shampoos. It would be best to talk with your vet about getting a prescription shampoo to treat the ringworm with, and to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Baby to keep her from pawing at the spot and irritating it more. Be sure to also thoroughly wash hands and clothing after handling her, and keep her separated from other pets until healed.

It could be that Elvis has ringworm, which she could have picked up when she went outside to go to the bathroom, but she could also have a hot spot or skin infection causing this spot. The only way to know how to treat this area is to have her seen by a vet, and I would recommend taking her in today or tomorrow. Once the cause of this skin problem is diagnosed, the vet can prescribe treatment for it. In the meantime, to keep her from licking at it and making it worse, I would put an Ecollar on her. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am assuming Juju is on medications from your Vet for the ringworm. I wouldn't take the cone off until hair starts to regrow. I think it might be too soon. I highly recommend touching base with your Vet as well. If the ringworm was diagnoses off a fungal culture they may want to repeat the culture to be sure it is 100% gone. Ringworm can be very frustrating to treat and usually requires a lengthy treatment. It would be best if she doesn't like the wound at all as it will not heal if she keeps licking it. You should leave the collar on all the time if she is licking the wound. Otherwise, leave it on for about an hour after applying the cream to make sure it has had enough time to be absorbed into the skin.

Hello. With lesions on or near the mouth, the easiest way to treat ringworm is with one of several antifungal medications that Maho will take by mouth. Anything topical, as you said, may be licked off, & because ringworm is contagious to other pets & people, you want to eliminate the organism as quickly as possible. Poor Evie! It does sound like she has had a lot to deal with in her short life, but you are doing exactly the right thing by making sure she has been to the vet's clinic for her medical problems. Having demodex mange can make her lethargic and feel unwell, so that is likely what you are seeing in Evie. The best you can do for her continue her treatments as prescribed, make sure she eats and drinks, and give her a lot of love and attention. Hopefully she will start feeling better soon :-)

Hello, and thank you for your question. Floki is such a cutie! My best suggestion would be to put an e-collar (cone) over his head that is long enough to prevent him from reaching the tail tip. Hopefully you will only need to use this for a few weeks as the ringworm treatment starts to work and he is less itchy. Also make sure the vet checks for any secondary bacterial infections that could be making the itching worse and preventing it from healing. I hope this helps, and that Floki feels better soon!
