Parvo exposure: Is my vaccinated dog safe after cleaning?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 16 lbs

My puppy has parvo but my puppy sleeps in our extra house I have a indoor dog who has all her shots up to date she’s an adult but I had my puppy in my room (before I knew it was parvo) while I was caring for him. I’ve bleached my floor and washed my bedsheets. Will my dog get sick too? She’s normal and healthy still not sick or showing signs. I just want to know if their is a chance she could get sick or is she safe to be in my room again

Luckily since Princess is an adult dog and has been vaccinated it's unlikely she would get sick. You've done a good job with cleaning also so it is safe for her to go into your room again. Unfortunately your older dog does run a risk of getting parvo since she was not previously vaccinated, but it is not guaranteed. You are doing the right thing by starting with environmental clean up and getting her vaccinated now. If it is possible, try to limit her access to areas that your puppy frequented to decrease the risk of transmission. Remember that parvo is spread through the feces. If you notice her acting abnormal at all, even if she skips one meal, I would recommend taking her in and having her tested so treatment can begin right away. I am sorry you are having to go through this. I hope Ielia will be ok!

It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

Can my vaccinated dog get parvo after exposure to an infected dog?

Hello, parvo is generally a disease of young unvaccinated dogs and older dogs whom are vaccinated very rarely contract the disease. You should clean his environment daily with a dilute bleach solution to reduce the contamination of parvo, especially where Bella used to sleep and places where she may have had diarrhea. Ideally, keep King away from those areas at least until you have cleaned them. If King does contract parvo, which again is highly unlikely, he is most likely to have a very mild form of it due to his vaccinations. Monitor him for any vomiting, diarrhea, or a decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if you do not any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My puppy has one vaccine. Is it safe to visit a house with past parvo?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is evidence that once a dog has parvo they are protected for life. But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. If their dog is vaccinated then Kona should be fine there. I hope this helps!

Puppy recovered from parvo. Is it safe to vaccinate and go outside?

Hi there! I'm glad your girl is feeling better. :) If she has recovered and is now eating and drinking normally, acting good, and no longer vomiting, then she should not need any special care from here on out - she can go back to normal life. There should be no concern with using the fan or air conditioner, bathing her, or letting her sleep on the floor. She can be vaccinated as normal now that she's no longer sick. And yes, it's fine for her to go outside and resume her normal daily walk routine.

My puppy died from parvo. Can I vaccinate my dog and clean my house?

Im so sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting Zowie vaccinated asap. She may have been exposed but vaccination may stimulate her immune system. Parvo can live in the soil for years so if that was the case be aware that any future puppies could be at risk. Your pup may have also had intestinal parasites or another disease. I recomend Zowie getting a full check up and parasite exam as well as vaccines to be safe. Clorox will kill parvo virus on hard surfaces. So mopping tile floors or cleaning dog kennels with Clorox helps. New puppy after parvo loss: How to care and safely toilet train?

Parvo virus is transmitted from the feces/vomit of one infected dog directly to another (it can survive in the soiled environment for over 12months if not adequately cleaned and disinfected with bleach). She should be isolated from any areas where she may have contact with non-vaccinated dogs or their feces until after her second parvo vaccination but your own house (or enclosed garden) should be relatively safe as long as any accidents from your previous pup have been removed and bleached/steamed
