Is it safe for my vaccinated puppy to visit a home with past parvo?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 27 days old | 15 lbs

Hello I have a question my dog was given to me by my aunt. She is now 10 months old all updated on her shots I've had her since she was about two and a half months. One of my aunts puppies had parvo months ago and got treated cleaned everything well long story short I'm visiting my aunt in about 2 weeks and I wanted to know if there's anything I need to be cautious about when I take my puppy over?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should be fine if Zoei is fully vaccinated and you aunt cleaned well after her puppy had Parvo. It is best to use bleach to clean after a dog with parvovirus. If that was done you have very little to worry about. Have a good night!

Hello, congratulations on your new puppy. The reason why you are getting different opinions is because there isn't a correct answer to avoid the risk of exposure. Regardless of the time you chose to bring her to your sisters, there will be a chance she could contract parvo from the environment. So how do you decrease this possibility.

First, understand that Parvovirus is a strong virus that can survive in the environment for long periods of time. The virus is actually most susceptible to bleach. Now, cleaning the entire house with bleach is not feasible, but what ever can be cleaned with bleach should. Your sister should get rid of any old toys, bedding, clothes from the puppy that had parvo, and use new things for this new puppy. Bedding and other washable materials should be washed with hot water at least 2-3 times prior to the new puppy coming.

A fully vaccinated puppy (has had 3-4 booster of the parvo vaccine combo) and is older than 16 weeks will have a significantly lower risk of becoming ill. As long as all of these steps are taken, then Bella should be very unlikely to become ill. However, that risk, will never be zero. Hope this helps and best of luck.

But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. Can a dog owner visit my unvaccinated puppy without spreading parvo?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is a fine line between being too over protective and not socializing the puppy enough. I think walks on side walks and NON dog parks are fine. I think playing with healthy (not recently sick or currently sick) and 100% vaccinated animals is also fine. I do not recommend boarding, doggie daycare or dog parks until 2 weeks after the puppy's final vaccinations. So yes I think it absolutely fine for your friend to visit. Humans can carry viruses. If it has been 2 months since her previous dog died of parvo it is likely safe. She should leave her shoes outside and have clean clothes on. Have her wash her hands before playing with your puppy. If she recently, with in 2 months, had a parvo infected dog that is still alive in her house I would not have her visit. Good luck!

Luckily since Princess is an adult dog and has been vaccinated it's unlikely she would get sick. You've done a good job with cleaning also so it is safe for her to go into your room again. Is my new vaccinated puppy safe from parvo after home disinfection?

It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

My new puppy isn't fully vaccinated. Can dog owners visit safely?

The breeder is correct that Edith should avoid contact with other dogs if you do not know their vaccination status, but she can have contact with dogs who are fully vaccinated. Parvovirus can be carried a person's shoes and clothes, which is why the breeder implied avoiding contact with people who have dogs. That being said, as long as the dogs at the home where your father is staying are fully vaccinated, there is no problem with him coming to see you :-)

My puppy died from parvo. Can I vaccinate my dog and clean my house?

Im so sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting Zowie vaccinated asap. She may have been exposed but vaccination may stimulate her immune system. Parvo can live in the soil for years so if that was the case be aware that any future puppies could be at risk. Your pup may have also had intestinal parasites or another disease. I recomend Zowie getting a full check up and parasite exam as well as vaccines to be safe. Clorox will kill parvo virus on hard surfaces. So mopping tile floors or cleaning dog kennels with Clorox helps. Is it safe to walk my vaccinated dog if new puppy has one parvo shot?

She will be protected and if she is kept away from other dogs, it's not likely she will bring anything back to the home that could infected the puppy. I hope this helps!
