Can my vaccinated dog get parvo after exposure to an infected dog?

Certainly. Prevention of parvovirus can be done by simply making sure your pet is fully vaccinated. At this age King is not fully vaccinated, even if you have started his vaccine series. Its best to keep him indoors mostly and away from other areas where dogs have eliminated. Your own backyard is ok if there are no other dogs there whose vaccine history is uncertain. If both pets are from the same litter then they can be around each other no problem, especially if they are both healthy. Only sick dogs can infect other sick dogs. If cost is a hindrance then its best to go to a low cost vaccine clinic to help get vaccines started right away. I hope that your fur baby King gets vaccinated soon. Best wishes and take care.

Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. Luckily since Princess is an adult dog and has been vaccinated it's unlikely she would get sick. You've done a good job with cleaning also so it is safe for her to go into your room again. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

There is less risk for an adult fully vaccinated dog to develop parvovirus, but it can be a very hardy virus and live for a long time on clothing or shoes. To be safe I would change clothes after coming in contact with the puppy and wash hands thoroughly. You can clean shoes in a mixture of bleach and water (1:32).

They should be fine. Since they have been vaccinated for parvovirus they are protected. Generally unvaccinated puppies are at high risk, adult dogs don't get it as often, especially those that are vaccinated.
