My 2-week-old puppies have a runny nose, but seem healthy. Is this normal?

It depends. Is he still nursing? Gaining weight like the rest of his litter mates? Showing interest in what's going on? Was he examined after birth to ensure that he doesn't have a cleft palate? Was his mother vaccinated against distemper? These are all questions your have to ask yourself. A little bit of clear nasal discharge in an otherwise normal puppy probably isn't cause for concern, but if any other concerning signs are present - coughing, lethargy, not nursing and/or gaining weight and ESPECIALLY if distemper is a concern - then see a vet about this.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Sounds like the puppy may have a upper respiratory infection or a virus or bacterial. Not consuming enough of mom's milk can cause the puppy not to receive enough antibodies towards certain infections. However, this can vary depending on the mother's own natural immunity. 320 grams or 0.7lbs for a 1 week old puppy sounds about right. I hope the antibiotics helps with the respiratory infection. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Crying at night, trying to escape from the box, crying for no reason is a common behaviour in puppies at their age. As long as they feed well, pass urine and stools regularly, put on weight and are active there is nothing to worry about. Watery nasal discharge and sneezing is probably a result of upper airways viral infection. If the discharge is watery, you just need to to clean their noses with clean tissue (baby wipes will be fine). However, if the discharge turns green/yellow or they start to be lethargic, you should get them checked by your local vets.

If the discharge is clear then give it a few days to see if it resolves on its own, because it is possible this is just allergic rhinitis. If the clear draingae is severe, then you can also call your vet to see if they can recommend antihistamines for Panda to try. However if the discharge is any other color, then it's best to take Panda in to your vet for treatment because an infection is likely present, requiring the use of antibiotics to clear things up. I hope your puppy feels better soon!

If she is eating well/nursing well, and going to the bathroom normally in addition to acting fine, she may be OK. I just worry about how young she is though. I wouldn't let this go on too long. If she were to get sick it's much harder on her because her immune system is so immature. I would take her in when you can to see the vet. They can check her lungs and make sure the congestion is just in her upper respiratory tract. Tiny puppies can also have a condition cause cleft palate, for example, and that can cause them to inhale the milk when nursing. This can cause pneumonia, so again, I'd have her examined as soon as you're able. In the meantime, taking her in the bathroom when members of the household shower can help clear out her upper respiratory react, acting like a humidifier with babies that have stuffy noses.

You should feed her puppy replacer milk ONLY at this age, anything else can cause severe diarrhea. the runny nose might be because of a minor upper respiratory infection, as long as she is active and does not seem in any respiratory distress I would recommend monitoring it, if it is getting worse- take her to the vet to get it checked.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or eventually to a chronic rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
