Why is my 1-week-old puppy breathing fast, crying, and has a runny nose?

so i've asked this question before, i have a 1 week old puppy thats been crying moving around kinda breathing rapidly then stops. i went to a nearby vet hospital as well and they have prescripted me with ammox for it since the pup had a slight discharge on the nose. old question was answered that it might be that the pup has not consumed substantial amount of milk but then he has been nursing pretty well his body weight is about 320 grams. i hope you can enlightened me on this one.

Sounds like the puppy may have a upper respiratory infection or a virus or bacterial. Not consuming enough of mom's milk can cause the puppy not to receive enough antibodies towards certain infections. However, this can vary depending on the mother's own natural immunity. 320 grams or 0.7lbs for a 1 week old puppy sounds about right.

I am worried that Bella may have pneumonia - which is fluid or infection of her lungs and has the symptoms you describe of open mouth labored breathing - running nose and less active/ crying. If she is not feeding as usual, you should take her to the emergency vet nearest to your home very quickly. They will probably recommend giving her oxygen, antibiotics and they will xray her chest to see how severe the problem is. Best of luck with Bella, I hope she does ok.

Why is my 4-week puppy wheezing, whining, and has a cloudy eye?

Wheezing makes me worried that mom and puppy may both have a respiratory infection. And a cloudy eye is also indicative of a problem, I would recommend a vet visit for mom and pup to get assessed. There are some structural abnormalities in brachiocephalic breeds that can cause upper respiratory stridor, or excessive noise while breathing, however that's typically not noted in a four week old puppy either. It could be a mild viral infection, as long as they are feeding and acting normally I wouldn't recommend trying to treat it, their immune system is still very fragile but the mother's milk should protect them from common infections at this age.

My newborn puppy has a runny nose. When should I be concerned?

It depends. Is he still nursing? Gaining weight like the rest of his litter mates? Showing interest in what's going on? Was he examined after birth to ensure that he doesn't have a cleft palate? Was his mother vaccinated against distemper? These are all questions your have to ask yourself. A little bit of clear nasal discharge in an otherwise normal puppy probably isn't cause for concern, but if any other concerning signs are present - coughing, lethargy, not nursing and/or gaining weight and ESPECIALLY if distemper is a concern - then see a vet about this.

It sounds like he might have an upper respiratory infection so he should be examined by a vet. He might need an antibiotic to treat. A change in weather should not cause him to gag and wheeze so I don't think that is the reason. Schedule an appointment with a vet as soon as you can.

Puppies do breathe a bit faster while asleep than adult dogs. An occasional sneeze or nasal drip is fine. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing or a yellow or green nasal discharge. See your veterinarian for an exam if any of these symptoms develop.
