My newborn puppy has a runny nose. When should I be concerned?

I would be concerned that this puppy may have a cleft palate, hence why it is effected when suckling. You can look at the roof of the mouth for a defect, but I would suggest going to your vet regardless as this is not normal.

It could be a mild viral infection, as long as they are feeding and acting normally I wouldn't recommend trying to treat it, their immune system is still very fragile but the mother's milk should protect them from common infections at this age.

If there is milk coming out of the nose while you are bottle feeding this puppy then yes, there is cause for concern. Puppies can be born with cleft palates, meaning that the soft palate (roof of the mouth) did not properly fuse. Penelope should be checked immediately by a vet to verify that the palate is intact, and if it isn't she should be fed via a tube to ensure that she isn't regurgitating the milk. Once she is a bit older, the palate can hopefully be fixed with surgery. I would have to say that clear discharge isn't normal either, and even if this isn't milk I would get it checked by a vet immediately to look for abnormalities in the palate and swallowing.

Poor Daisy. If the discharge is just clear and not yellow or green, then this is likely a sign of allergic rhinitis. Something in the environment is causing her to have an allergic inflammatory response in her nasal passages. However, as long as the discharge remains clear she may get over this on her own over the next few weeks. Monitor her daily for any changes and have her seen by your veterinarian if things get worse (sneezing, infection type discharge, decreased appetite, etc). But hopefully she won't need to be seen and she improves on her own.

If the discharge is clear then give it a few days to see if it resolves on its own, because it is possible this is just allergic rhinitis. If the clear draingae is severe, then you can also call your vet to see if they can recommend antihistamines for Panda to try. However if the discharge is any other color, then it's best to take Panda in to your vet for treatment because an infection is likely present, requiring the use of antibiotics to clear things up. Poor Monty! This is definitely concerning as nasal discharge, especially when it is not clear, can be an indication of an infection. Puppies tend to be at a higher risk. Usually these infections affect the upper respiratory tract (nasal passages and trachea) but can spread to the lungs and cause serious damage. Monty needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine the cause and start the appropriate treatment.

Puppies do breathe a bit faster while asleep than adult dogs. An occasional sneeze or nasal drip is fine. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, difficulty breathing or a yellow or green nasal discharge. See your veterinarian for an exam if any of these symptoms develop.
