Puppy nails are sharp and hurting mom. How do I trim them safely?

Great question! You can cut them yourself, and I would get some dog nail trimmers from the pet store. Take a look at Nala's nails, and can see a clear part and a pink part. The pink part is the quick, and if cut that, it will be painful to her and it will bleed a lot. It's always best to cut a little a time to avoid the quick than cutting too much at once. Now some dog's nails are black, and you can't see the quick on those nails. It's best to cut a little bit off in that case. If you accidentally cut the quick, you can put styptic powder or cornstarch in the palm of your hand, and hold the nail in it to stop the bleeding. Nails can be clipped at any age, but you need to know how to do it in order for it not to cause damage or being painful, i strongly recommend that a professional (vet, vet nurse or groomer) shows you how to do it the first time.

That depends on you and Dexter! Basically you want to remove the hook of the nail. Describing nail trims is very difficult and I recommend you be shown by your veterinarian. You can also find videos on YouTube but once again, being shown is probably easiest. Just ask your vet next time you are in the office. You can start trimming puppy nails right away. There is no minimum age to do it, but usually we start when they are being weaned from their mother. It is best to start when they are young and get them used to it. Make sure to use treats and make it a positive experience for them. And make sure that you do not cut them too short. How often you need to cut depends on their length and your dog's lifestyle. If she spends time outside walking on a hard surface then she may wear them down naturally. If she is mostly inside then she will probably need them cut more frequently. If she has white nails then you should be able to visualize the quick and should be able to judge when they need to be cut. You want to avoid the quick as cutting the quick is painful to the dog. You can use a nail grinder instead of clippers; these are designed to "file" the nails down rather than cut them and they dramatically decrease the risk of bleeding during a nail trim.
