Is it safe to trim my puppy's nails at home, or should a vet do it?

Nails can be clipped at any age, but you need to know how to do it in order for it not to cause damage or being painful, i strongly recommend that a professional (vet, vet nurse or groomer) shows you how to do it the first time.

They will cut the nail, remove it from the pad, clean the wound with antiseptic and probably prescribe an antibiotic and a pain medication. Great question! You can cut them yourself, and I would get some dog nail trimmers from the pet store. Take a look at Nala's nails, and can see a clear part and a pink part. The pink part is the quick, and if cut that, it will be painful to her and it will bleed a lot. It's always best to cut a little a time to avoid the quick than cutting too much at once. Now some dog's nails are black, and you can't see the quick on those nails. It's best to cut a little bit off in that case. If you accidentally cut the quick, you can put styptic powder or cornstarch in the palm of your hand, and hold the nail in it to stop the bleeding. Yes you can clip them yourself. There are quite a few little videos on the internet where you can see how it is done. You can also take your rabbit to the vet and ask the techs to show you how to safely clip his nails.

These little claws can be damaging to the mom and cutting them would be helpful. It's also good to get them used to having their nails clipped at a young age. There is definitely a technique and landmarks to watch for when cutting them to avoid cutting the fleshy part of the nail. It's best to just trim the tips when first doing nail trims. Ouch, poor Dexter! You're right, accidents do happen (and I've quicked many nails myself). Since Dexter seems resistant to walking on the affected foot, I recommend calling his vet. The vet may be able to prescribe a pain medication (typically a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as carprofen) for the next day or two. Unfortunately, there are no safe and effective over the counter pain medication options. Be sure to keep him from licking at the quicked nail, as this could exacerbate the issue. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Its impossible to know with out examining the quick of the nail. if the quick of the nail is cut, it will cause pain and bleed. I recommend to have the veterinarian cut the nails at least this one time since they are the best ones to know if there are concerns with the length of the quicks. Moving forward, make sure the groomer is clipping her nails. Best of luck.
