You can start trimming puppy nails right away. There is no minimum age to do it, but usually we start when they are being weaned from their mother. It is best to start when they are young and get them used to it. Make sure to use treats and make it a positive experience for them. And make sure that you do not cut them too short. It is better to trim them more freqeuntly. Puppy nails grow very quickly and are very sharp, so I usually recommend trimming puppy nails weekly.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend getting Cooper used to having his nails trimmed right away. The sooner you desensitize dogs to nail trims, the better it is for them (and you!) long-term. Start slowly, getting him used to having his paws handled, and then progress to trimming the nails back using a trimmer. If you look online there are multiple sources with pictures describing how to identify the "quick" in a dog's nails to try to make the process easier. Good luck!

Hello,

You can trim Oxy's nails now! It is good to start this early in life with puppies. Use training and treats to make it a positive experience so it will be easy to do throughout his life. Letting them run on concrete can also help naturally file the nails down.

You can start trimming the nails now. Be sure to keep the experience positive and happy. Be very careful not to cut the nails too short. Bailey is forming her opinion about experiences, and if she has a bad experience she will be reluctant to let you do this as an adult. I hope this helps.

Great question! You can cut them yourself, and I would get some dog nail trimmers from the pet store. Take a look at Nala's nails, and can see a clear part and a pink part. The pink part is the quick, and if cut that, it will be painful to her and it will bleed a lot. It's always best to cut a little a time to avoid the quick than cutting too much at once. Now some dog's nails are black, and you can't see the quick on those nails. It's best to cut a little bit off in that case. If you accidentally cut the quick, you can put styptic powder or cornstarch in the palm of your hand, and hold the nail in it to stop the bleeding. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Starting gentle grooming at a young age is a good idea to train Mimi that grooming is OK and good. I would start by just having the instruments (clippers, nail trimmers, etc) near her, and touching her, but not on and not actually trimming or clipping. With this include lots of positive praise and treats. Playing with her toes and nails with your hands on a regular basis helps as well. You can then start grooming in small unstressful bits of time. These little claws can be damaging to the mom and cutting them would be helpful. It's also good to get them used to having their nails clipped at a young age. There is definitely a technique and landmarks to watch for when cutting them to avoid cutting the fleshy part of the nail. It's best to just trim the tips when first doing nail trims. My dog gets aggressive during nail trims. How can I safely cut them?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In order to get a pet used to having their nails trimmed you need a lot of time and patience. You need to start very slowly by touching the dogs limbs and giving treats when they don't react. You do this about 50-100 times then you move to the toes. Repeat the above. After she is used to that touch, you touch her toes with nail clippers and treat. Basically you are getting her used to the touch and tools before even getting to the nails. She needs to be relaxed the entire time. If at any time she becomes aggressive, you stop what you are doing and try again with the previous step when she's relaxed. This can take months. In the meantime, I would talk to your vet about sedatives so you can clip Chloes nails in a non-stressful manner. If you try when she's stressed it is going to make training her even more difficult. How often should I bathe my puppy & trim its tiny sharp nails?

Mila should not be bathed more often than once every 6-8 weeks. You can use pet wipes to "spot clean" her between baths. You can use small clippers to clip just the points of her nails. If she has clear nails, you can visualize the "quick". It appears as the pink part within the nail. Do not clip it as it will bleed and hurt. Handle her feet frequently and use praise/rewards afterwards.
