How long to train a 7-month Husky to heel consistently and reliably?

Having had Siberians for more than forty years, I know just what you mean about training. Many people try to train their dogs by "making" them do something and then rewarding them for it . . . such as saying "give me your paw," grabbing it and raising it, and then praising. Instead, try to catch Troy doing what you want, name the behavior, and then reward him for it. For example, if he puts his paw on your knee, say "Shake (or whatever comand you want to use), good dog!" and reward. This is a different kind of conditioning and can be very useful with stubborn, hard-to-train breeds. I've trained my dog off leash by taking several group obedience classes. Then you can practice with her in a contained area, with distractions and with a trainer to supervise and give pointers. It's often difficult to train this without starting in a controlled situation. Working on come in your yard and house and walking beside you on a loose leash through the streets and past other dogs is where to start. Be patient this can take quite a while to get your dog reliable off leash, especially since she is still a puppy. A 10 minute was twice a day is really encouraged. However, once their body acclimates to that you could easily work them up to an hour walk it more a day. If you want to run them I would start at a 5 or 10 min run several times a week and work yourself up by 5 minute increments weekly. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

As someone who has had Siberians for over forty years, I can assure you that he is not being bad. But you are correct in saying that you have to be smarter than he is. You must be very consistent with your commands, and enforce them every time. DO not give in to him if he wants to play and you don't. You ned to decidee right now, today, who is going to be the boss in your house . . . Atlas or you. I would advise that you take him to a good obedience school right away, so you can learn how to handle him. If any instructor tells you his is a problem, find a different school. Many trainers own easy dogs like Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, etc. and do not understand the SIberian temperament. Someone familiar with the Northern breed dogs would be your best bet. You can work on training her to 'settle' in a certain area like a bed, and then work on having her go to that place for short periods of time while you are in the other room. Over time you can gradually increase the amount of time that she spends in her 'settle' place. Consistency is key - if you're struggling you could always contact a trainer as well. In the meantime while you are training I would recommend either keeping Luna confined to a crate if she is crate trained so she can't see people in the kitchen or open the gates. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! 1) Come, stay, sit, give paw, leave it, look and walk nicely (heel) on a leash should be learned. At 6 months they may not be perfect but at that age they can know how to do them. 2) This depends on what you want out of her. Are you doing agility or obedience trials or hunting? If not, then I would say 2-5 mins is reasonable. At 6 months old I am not surprised she gets up. I would gradually increase the stay increments and realize she is still young and easily distracted. I would give her a break every 5-10 mins. If she gets up then bring her back to position and then slowly distance yourself. Start over in a sense, giving treats every 30 sec to a minute until you get to your desired distance. 3) I would only train for 30-40 mins with at least 2-3 breaks. How many times a day is your personal preference and how much time you have a day to dedicate to dog training. 2-3 times per day sounds reasonable. Personally I could only dedicate one time per day during the week. 4) I don't have advice here as I am not a dog trainer and I am not sure what you mean. I recommend you work with a trainer who uses positive reinforcement techniques to help train Prometheus. It may take a few months, but with proper and consistent training and rewards, hopefully you'll be able to get him trained. Also consider a dog daycare to help him burn off some energy.
