Why is my dog's nipple swollen after giving birth, but she's not in pain?

That could be a normal reaction of the mammary glands after the season, and it is likely to resolve spontaneously one or two weeks after the season. if signs persist more than that and discharge comes out from nipples a check up would ideal as false pregnancy or mammary gland inflammation/infection may be present.

It is possible that what you are seeing is a normal vein, a vein with a blood clot, or a bruise. If there is blood coming from the nipples, I recommend that Bonnie be examined by a vet as this would indicate that there is bleeding going on within the milk duct system and is highly abnormal. There could be infection, trauma, or a bleeding/clotting disorder causing this to happen.

If you can easily express milk from each nipple and Remi does not have a fever (rectal temperature over 102.5), then the engorgement is perfectly normal. As the puppies get older and Remi's milk supply regulates, there should not be as much engorgement, but the mammary glands will stay enlarged while she is nursing.

Nursing dogs can be prone to an infection of the mammary glands called mastitis. It causes the gland to become swollen and hard, and it makes the dog very sick. Mastitis can be fatal if not treated, and it's concerning as well that Chapa doesn't want to nurse her puppies. They are close to being able to be weaned, so I would start weaning them now. I will put a method below on how to do this. As for Chapa, because mastitis is fatal if untreated, she needs to see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Weaning puppies: To help them wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with puppy formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry puppy food only.

It's possible that she is going through a false pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) if you are sure that she didn't get bred by a male dog. Dogs often get mammary enlargement and will lactate when they are in a false pregnancy. Your veterinarian can gather a history and assess Princess. They may want to x-ray or ultrasound her to confirm that she is pregnant or not if she was out of your sight within the past 2 months or so. A false pregnancy usually resolves without treatment but it's also possible that she is developing some mild mastitis from the mammary enlargement. You can apply a warm compress to it to help with pain and swelling. She will need to go to a vet to have it checked as it may be an infection or a growth. If she is nervous or anxious then i would call and see what arrangements can be made to minimize her stress. Such as medication for anxiety prior to travel or not waiting in the lobby with other dogs and people but maybe and exam room or the car until they are ready for you.

Unspayed dogs can be prone to mammary tumors, which causes swelling and pain. Fifty percent of these mammary tumors are malignant, so you will need to take Mocha into a vet first thing in the morning to have this examined and diagnosed.
