Is Simparica safe for my dog? I'm worried about reported side effects.

Hello. All tick and flea products if overdosed or if the individual animal has a sensitivity can cause seizures as the drugs typically work on the nervouse system of the insects. Check with your vet about which products in your area are safe and effective. Avoid cheap products because amounts of drug aren't regulated and we often see advrse side effects with the grocery store products (or dollar store products). Also, always give as directed and don't overdose or give a different animal meds meant for your animal or vice versa. Overall zoetis products like nexguard and bravecto are good and this looks like their new product.

Simparica works efficiently against flea and ticks. Covering ticks is very important and this product is excellent. I think both are good products with few side effects. The topical medications do sometimes cause some irritation to the skin, even if it doesn’t seem red, but it typically does not last long. Oral preventatives in he same class as Simparica can cause gastrointestinal signs and lethargy. You could try a different oral medication like Nexgard or Bravecto - some do better with one over the other. I wouldn’t worry about the smell from the Vectra.

Parker should be fine. Both Bravecto and Simparica are similar types of medication, but they are tested before being sold at multiple times the regular dose and have minimal side effects. She definitely shouldn't have fleas now!

Simparica is a once a month flea and tick preventive medication and giving it daily will soon overdose your dog and possibly cause severe health problems and death. So please, give Simparica only as instructed on the label. A one time application will likely be enough to kill the mange. If not, ask your vet to prescribe Bravecto (one-time application) for your dog. You can give Omega 3 fatty acids daily.

The active ingredient in Simparica is sarolaner. At this time, there are no known drug interactions reported with sarolaner. I would therefore use a spot on treatment for fleas and ticks like Frontline or K9 Advantix II. I hope this helps!
