Is it normal if my senior dog is so tired after kidney fluid therapy?

I'm sorry to hear your dog isn't doing well. No, this isn't normal - if he has been diagnosed with kidney failure then I recommend keeping him hospitalized and on IV fluids until his kidney values improve and he's feeling better and regains his appetite. Sometimes we can turn kidney failure cases around, and sometimes we can't - it really depends on their response to our therapy. Your vet may have not been open for the weekend and therefore had to discharge him Friday, but I recommend looking for the nearest 24 hour emergency vet location if he's still doing poorly, and then potentially transferring him back to your vet Monday morning.

Hello, sorry to hear about Memi. I would concerned that there may be something else going on with his eyes that is separate from his kidney disease. If he is very dehydrated, it could be possible that his tear film is very poor and he may need topical lubricants, but I would also recommend ruling out superficial corneal ulcers and inflammation of his eye. If Memi develops any squinting, worsening discharge, eye pain, or redness then he should be evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If Dora was in the hospital recently, she liekyl didn't sleep well. Also, the stress of receive an IV drip could have made her sleepy as well. if she recevied any antibiotics or medicines through the drip and not just fluids, then yes, these meds could also be making her sleepy. Make sure she is eating several small meals throughout the day to ensure her blood sugar is staying up. If she isn't eating, I would give her some nutrical (a high calorie vitamin supplement), karo syrup or something equivalent on her gums to help keep her blood sugar up. If she isn't improving or not eating, I would have your vet take another look at her. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Torres! What an ordeal! With out knowing what medication he was given by your Vet I am not sure how to guide you. But when dogs spend the night at the hospital they rarely sleep well. Some dogs are very stressed and stand, bark and cry the ENTIRE time. I always tell owners, especially with older dogs, that when they go home they likely will be exhausted and sleep soundly for 12-24 hours. That in combinations with a medication that causes drowsiness is likely what is hitting Torres so hard. Also when older dogs are on IV fluids they produce more urine and that may cause dripping if he is so exhausted. My recommendation is to see how 12 hours+ at home play out. If he is still excessively tired and won't eat or drink then I would call your Vet to discuss and consider a recheck. I hope this helps and I wish Torres a speedy recovery!

I think this behaviour is just secondary to her age because by now the anaesthetic hasbeen already completely methabolised by her body. I would not worry, unless you notice any other abnormal symptom.

Great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer. If your dog is eating and drinking normally and the issues that necessitated her hospitalization have resolved, I would be far less concerned. Until she has completed the courses of medication, it is ultimately impossible to determine if her lethargy is secondary to medication or due to illness. Consider calling your vet to discuss if any of the medications can be discontinued or if any doses can be reduced to limit potential lethargy. I hope that all goes well!

Please, check the leg she had the catheter in from the shaved area up to the shoulder. Sometimes after having the catheter in the leg becomes very painful or swollen. Some cats get upset once they have been in the hospital and they need some time at home to get back to normal. Please, keep an eye on Nemo at home, she should fully recover within 12-24hrs . If she is not acting as normal by tomorrow, you should take her back to your vets.
