Why is my dog so tired and dripping urine after ibuprofen treatment?

Hi. This may be normal after spending a lot of time in the hospital. Most pets don't sleep or get as much rest as normal in the hospital. I would recommend having her seen by the veterinarian that performed the ultrasound for a recheck. If after 48 hours my patients are still sedated and not feeling well after I give them sedatives in the hospital, I want to see them for a physical examination just to make sure everything is ok. Every dog is different and depending on the sedatives used, could cause sedation for days after the drugs were given. My own dog used to take 72 hours to recover from a morphine injection so I have been in the same position as you. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It may be Cooper overdid it outside today. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

The picture I am seeing does not show much evidence of infection but of course take her in first thing in the morning to have someone evaluate in person. There is not a whole lot I would recommend doing tonight. If the area seems painful you can wrap an ice pack in a thin cloth or paper towel and ice the area for 5-10 minutes. That bandage should probably be changed every 24-48 hours so if that has not been done I would do that if possible. If not, consider leaving it off overnight if she won’t scratch at it. The prednisone is very unlikely to be the culprit of any of the signs you are seeing. Best of luck to you and Lupita.

Sorry to hear about Tobie. I am wondering if Potassium Bromide is the only drug he is currently using for Seizure activity. I ask because it is not typically a first line of defense sort of medication that we choose any more for these conditions, due to level of effectiveness and side effect profile. If he is not used to this type of medication, an increased dose can definitely result in some unwanted side effects. Since you gave it a while ago already, there is not much you can do for him in terms of getting it out of his system forcibly, other than letting nature run its course. However, he may benefit from supportive care in a hospital setting if you feel his symptoms are very concerning. Personally, I would not allow him to continue walking freely around the house right now in case he accidentally injures himself. Once he is out of this stupor, he can be unconfined. If this sort of behavior is continuing after another 12-24 hours, he should definitely be seen to determine if this is his disease process worsening. In terms of diarrhea, this could have been due to stress, the medication, or general GI upset from countless other reasons. One episode of diarrhea is not something of significant concern.
