My dog with kidney failure is collapsing and shaking. Is this normal?

Sometimes a kidney biopsy or ultrasound might show changes to the kidneys that are consistent with a problem present since birth, but other times it’s impossible to know what initially triggered chronic kidney disease. I’m concerned about the bloody stool and collapse - it sounds like Angel is in serious condition. I’d recommend taking her to a veterinarian if you’re able. Dehydration can be more serious for dogs with kidney disease and at the very least your vet your vet may want to give her some fluids.

Unfortunately there is no cure for chronic kidney disease (ckd), and there is no cure for heart disease. I am suspecting that Jumbo collapsed due to his heart problems. The symptoms of heart disease can be managed with medication, and your vet can discuss with you which ones are appropriate for him and his symptoms. With ckd, treatment depends on the severity of his symptoms. Again, your vet is the best person to discuss what treatments would be good for him, which may include IV fluids and a kidney diet. I’m so sorry for your loss! Depending on the stage of kidney failure, symptoms can include nausea, lethargy, and sometimes pain. However, with appropriate hydration and care, the condition is not necessarily painful or uncomfortable. Seizures are typically not painful, but can be disorienting to a dog. You definitely did the right thing by taking your dog to the emergency room. I apologize again for your loss and hope this helps!

Unfortunately this is a very severe and dramatic presentation and renal failure is not possibly reversed. Healing is unfortunately not possible even though this process can be slowed down. Hospitalisation and fluid therapy is highly recommended and nutritional support is needed.

Hi. This may be normal after spending a lot of time in the hospital. Most pets don't sleep or get as much rest as normal in the hospital. Poor girl. I would certainly consider at least getting her checked again and fluid therapy (IV or subcutaneously). If her values are not too bad, she may be able to be managed at home with subcutaneous fluids that you yourself give. That is if you are up to the task. Also I am not sure if she is on a prescription kidney diet. If not, then she needs to be transitioned right away. The vet can also prescribe some anti-nausea medication for her to help with her condition. Hello, sorry to hear about Tobey. It could be that he is allergic to the protein in his new food and this may need to be addressed by your veterinarian. There are other diets low in protein used in patients with kidney disease that you and your veterinarian could explore for Tobey. Alternatively, you may consult with a nutritionist to develop a balanced diet for him.
