Why is my senior dog's nose dripping green mucus? What can I do?

Poor Spike. With his age, there could be several different things going on and the tail and green nasal discharge could be unrelated. As far as the tail, this could just be indicating that he doesn't feel well or it could be something going on with his tail muscles or anal glands. The nasal discharge is quite concerning. This could be indicative of a pneumonia, bacterial infection, severe upper respiratory infection, viral infection, fungal infection, or even cancer. You could try Benadryl twice a day (see link below), a humidifier in his sleeping area, and even holding him in a small bathroom with a hot steamy shower going to help break up the mucus. With his age though, I would strongly recommend to have him seen by your vet. So cute! He might just have a sinus infection and need an antibiotic. Have a vet examine him to determine the cause and treat. If he just needs an antibiotic then it shouldn't be too expensive. You could call some clinics in your area and ask for an estimate for an exam and antibiotics.

The two main options are a foreign body in the nasal cavity or a nasal tumor. in order to find out what it is he will need to be taken to the vet and either an endoscopy or a CT scan will need to be done to get a diagnosis.

Hello. Your Leo may have a mild upper respiratory infection, or he may have inhaled some foreign substance that made its way into the sinuses. Pieces of grass, seeds or awns all can inadvertently work their way up. If there is no excessive sneezing, you can give this a day or so to see if he can move out a possible irritant, but if it worsens or the discharge turns bloody, or he also develops a discharge from the eye(s), please see your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. This could be a fungal infection or an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. If bacterial and fungal cultures have not yet been performed, I would recommend that you request them. I would also suggest a consultation with a veterinary internist for a rhinoscopy with possible biopsies. You can find one in your area on www.acvim.org.

This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment. That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian.
