My dog has green snot but is still active. Should I be worried?

Hello, again. I would just watch him for now. More than likely he will sneeze out anything remaining. Again, as long as he is not having any difficulties breathing, I would just keep an eye on things. He may have a bit of an upper respiratory infection going on & these are pretty self limiting after a week or so. If he is otherwise happy & eating well, he should not need antibiotics at this time. He will not inhale this into his lungs as this is pretty impossible to do through the nasal passages. So if he is not in any distress, he will be fine. Poor Roxy! I can definitely see the dry discharge from both nostrils. You’re right in saying that this can be caused by an upper respiratory infection. In most cases these infections cannot be transmitted to people or from people to dogs. These are very common in dogs, and can easily be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, nasal discharge can be caused by several other diseases such as a nasal foreign body or mass, or even pneumonia. Your vet can do some blood work and x-rays to determine the exact cause of Roxy’s nasal discharge. You should have her seen immediately if she begins acting lethargic, loses her appetite, or you believe she’s having trouble breathing.

It can be a respiratory virus or bacterial infection causing the discharge and sneezing. Some viruses can be more severe than others, and english bulldogs can be more sensitive to an infection due to their short noses and extra tissue in the mouth. If he is eating and drinking still, you can have him checked when your regular vet is open. if he is having a hard time breathing, lethargic, GI upset, or anorexia, then I would find an ER to see him today.

It’s possible that he’s got rhinitis, which can be caused by an allergic type reaction, an infection, or even an auto-immune type condition where the nasal passages become inflamed for no reason. A foreign body (such as a grass seed) would also be possible, as would a nasal tumor. A rhinoscopy (scope of the nose) and biopsy may be needed for a diagnosis and to determine the best treatments. Poor Spike. With his age, there could be several different things going on and the tail and green nasal discharge could be unrelated. As far as the tail, this could just be indicating that he doesn't feel well or it could be something going on with his tail muscles or anal glands. The nasal discharge is quite concerning. This could be indicative of a pneumonia, bacterial infection, severe upper respiratory infection, viral infection, fungal infection, or even cancer. You could try Benadryl twice a day (see link below), a humidifier in his sleeping area, and even holding him in a small bathroom with a hot steamy shower going to help break up the mucus. With his age though, I would strongly recommend to have him seen by your vet. Poor Jake. If the snot is green or yellow in color then he will need to see a vet because this is an upper respiratory secondary bacterial infection. A short course of antibiotics should clear this up as long as he doesn't have any other complications. If he is having a hard time breathing you can use a humidifier or place him in the bathroom with the shower running for about 10 minutes to help moisturizer his nasal passage and break up some of the mucous until you can get him seen by your vet. Also offering him slightly warmed cans of wet dog food can entice him to eat if his appetite has decreased somewhat. After he is better I would make it a point to get his Bordetella vaccine done every 6 months to help protect him from upper respiratory infections in the future.
