My senior dog has a dry, cracked nose and bloody sneezes. Vet?

It looks like her nose is very dry and cracked. To be safe, I would get her in to see a vet as soon as possible, especially if she's feeling sick otherwise, any unusual lethargy, refusal to eat and drink, vomiting, diarrhea could all point to this being a much more serious condition. I do recommend very gently cleaning her nose and applying a thin protective coating of Vaseline to her nose to help slow the cracking and dryness.

Poor girl! It sounds like she has some allergies! You can try giving her 1/2 tablet of a 25mg Benadryl to see if this helps but with her having blood from her nose this could be something more serious like a fungal infection or a tumor in the nose so I would have your vet do an exam on her and maybe some skull X-rays. Also if her paws are dry looking she could have a bacterial or yeast infection between her toes or Paw pads. Your vet will be able to look at her pads again and see if she needs medicine for that as well. your vet will also be able to put her on a stronger allergy medicine if needed. There could be a couple of things going on with Ben. The dry, cracked, and bleeding nose could be due to allergies, such as to plastic. Losing weight despite eating could be due to a medical issue, such as diabetes or kidney disease. The growths by his ears could be benign tumors, but in older dogs, there's always a chance it could be caused by malignant tumors. I would take Ben into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) on the growths to diagnose the causes of his various symptoms. To do an FNA, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform.

Dry noses can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, including infectious conditions, immune mediated issues, allergies, or more systemic diseases. Since this seems to be a recurring annual issue, I would be inclined to think that allergies seem most likely. Max will lick anything off of his nose, so try to apply topical treatments as he is eating to at least allow for a brief period of contact time. You can try starting an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement (such as Welactin). Topically, you can try applying vitamin E (buy OTC capsules and open them up to apply the contents to his nose) and moisturize with small amounts of lanolin. If the cracking continues or worsens, a trip to the vet is in order for further diagnostic testing. I hope that all goes well!

At 13 years of age, a nasal tumor would be most likely. A tumor typically would cause bleeding out of just one nostril. Other possibilities would be a severe bacterial infection, tooth root abscess, nasal foreign material (I've seen dogs that had toy stuffing in the nose), or fungal infection. Unfortunately anesthesia for nasal scoping and often CT scan is usually necessary to get a diagnosis.

Have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause. She could have an infection, especially since she is on prednisone, and need an antibiotic to treat. She could also have dental disease and your vet can do an oral examination to evaluate her teeth.

Poor Bailey! Coughing up blood along with bleeding from the nose are quite serious, and I would take her into the vet now. This bleeding could be a sign of ulcers, an inability to clot blood, liver failure, respiratory disease, or cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibly in an old dog, and if she did have cancer that had spread to her lungs, it could cause these signs. I would take her into a vet right away. The vet can do routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly blood clotting tests to see what is causing her to cough up blood and have nose bleeds. Once the cause is found, the vet can determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate for her.
