Why does my senior dog have dry nose, lost weight, and ear growths?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male

Hi my black Labrador. Has dry cracked bleeding nose. And has lost a bit weight. He has a few growths growing close to his ears. I'm a bit concerned. Not sure if it's down to old age. He's 9yrs old now. He is eating and drink loads.

There could be a couple of things going on with Ben. The dry, cracked, and bleeding nose could be due to allergies, such as to plastic. Losing weight despite eating could be due to a medical issue, such as diabetes or kidney disease. The growths by his ears could be benign tumors, but in older dogs, there's always a chance it could be caused by malignant tumors. I would take Ben into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) on the growths to diagnose the causes of his various symptoms. To do an FNA, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform.

I recommend to call your vet and have Tedy examined. When things develop suddenly, there is a concern that this is a disease. Older dogs can develop autoimmune conditions, hypothyroidism or this could be something like ringworm (which humans can get). Unfortunately, there's not much you can do because Tedy will lick off anything you put on the area. I hope this helps.

Why is my senior dog sneezing with a bloody nose and dry paws?

Poor girl! It sounds like she has some allergies! You can try giving her 1/2 tablet of a 25mg Benadryl to see if this helps but with her having blood from her nose this could be something more serious like a fungal infection or a tumor in the nose so I would have your vet do an exam on her and maybe some skull X-rays. Also if her paws are dry looking she could have a bacterial or yeast infection between her toes or Paw pads. Your vet will be able to look at her pads again and see if she needs medicine for that as well. your vet will also be able to put her on a stronger allergy medicine if needed. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

Why is my senior dog bleeding from a leg spot and losing weight fast?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to know for sure just based on a description. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as his weight loss and blood loss are quite concerning. Why is my old dog's nose bleeding? Is it a tumor or something else?

At 13 years of age, a nasal tumor would be most likely. A tumor typically would cause bleeding out of just one nostril. Other possibilities would be a severe bacterial infection, tooth root abscess, nasal foreign material (I've seen dogs that had toy stuffing in the nose), or fungal infection. Unfortunately anesthesia for nasal scoping and often CT scan is usually necessary to get a diagnosis.

Dog nosebleeds, breathing hard, losing weight & hair. What could it be?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry to hear that your pet Bubbalina is so ill. Nose bleeds that are persistent in an older dog are highly suspicious of cancer or a fungal infection. Trauma to the nose is also possible, but unlikely to result in chronic bleeding episodes. I am so sorry but Bubbalina needs to be seen by your vet right away for testing (Bloodwork +.- radiographs). If cancer is present, then steroids may be recommended to try and slow down the progression and also supportive care can be provided to Bubbalina to hopefully make her more comfortable. My senior dog has a bloody nose. Is it an emergency vet visit?

It looks like her nose is very dry and cracked. To be safe, I would get her in to see a vet as soon as possible, especially if she's feeling sick otherwise, any unusual lethargy, refusal to eat and drink, vomiting, diarrhea could all point to this being a much more serious condition. I do recommend very gently cleaning her nose and applying a thin protective coating of Vaseline to her nose to help slow the cracking and dryness.

My senior dog has a red, peeling nose and new bumps. What's wrong?

You need to take Calvin to a vet for an exam. There is a chance Calvin was bitten by a rodent and was infected with a disease transmissible by rodents. The bumps on his body could be swollen lymph nodes which also would point to either an infection or, at worst, lymphoma. Such diseases include plague, leptospirosis, tularemia and other bacterial infections some of which are transmissible to people also. Please take Calvin for an exam ASAP.
