Hi My poodle has again a dry nose. I think his nose becomes dry once per year, maybe around this period (I am not sure). He is acting exactly the same. He is happy, playing, eating..... But his nose gets so dry and cracked, that even blood gets out. We tried putting cream, aloe vera, but he licks it off. Why is his nose dry and cracked? How can we help him? Many thanks!

Some dogs can develop nasal hyperkeratosis which is a benign condition that causes a dry, crusty nose. Keeping the nose moisturized can help. A dry nose could also be a sign of immune mediated disease like pemphigus or lupus. I'd recommend having your veterinarian examine Max's nose. A biopsy may be recommended if your vet is suspicious of an immune mediated skin disease.

You could try rubbing a small amount of petroleum jelly on his nose to keep it moist and prevent cracking. If it continues than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat the problem. It could be related to an allergy and he may need an anti-histamine or anti-inflammatory to help treat.
