My senior dog has a bleeding tumor. What are non-surgical options?

I am so sorry to hear about Tilly. Unfortunately with many of these tumors surgical removal is the only way to fix the problem. If that isn't an option right now, in some instances depending on type of tumor placing the pet on prednisone may decrease the size but can have negative side effects (panting, increases urinating). Another consideration if the tumor is bleeding is a traditional Chinese medicine called Yunnan Baiyao. I would ask your vet if these are options for your dog.

That is a very large tumor that has likely outgrown its blood supply and is opening up. You can’t tell what type of tumor it is without aspirating the cells. At this point, the best option is to remove the tumor but it’s so large that this may be difficult but not impossible. You can loosely bandage it with a gauze bandage. Make sure the bandage does not cut of blood flow to the lower leg. You could also wrap the leg in a towel and then tape the towel so it stays on. I am so sorry, but there is nothing you can do at home for this, other than try to keep it clean if it breaks open and bleeds (which it looks like it could do at any time). I am sorry, but there is no cure for cancer. Small tumors can be removed surgically and then undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy depending on the type of tumor and if clean margins were made during surgery. If this is not an option for Hundoll, then he would be considered for hospice-type care. I would recommend that you have have him evaluated by a vet for pain. You can feed him whatever he wants at this point. Acupuncture may help with some of the pain, but it won't be able to stop the growth of the tumor. You may be able to find a vet in your area that uses herbal remedies, but they need to be prescribed after careful examination of the dog.
