My dog's belly growth is bleeding. What home remedies can I use?

If Jack has had this lump for a while, then it is likely a tumor and these can easily bleed sometimes. They do tend to bleed for a while, but don't worry, because he will not lose too much blood and it will stop eventually. You can help stop the bleeding by taking a clean rag or gauze and apply pressure to the wound. Hold it there for at least 3 minutes and try not to move, because movements will keep the blood from clotting. Do not wipe the wound either. After the three minutes, gently release pressure and check to see if it's still bleeding. If it's still bleeding, apply pressure again for 3 minutes. After it's done bleeding, it would be good to have a veterinarian check the lump if you are suspicious of it being a tumor. It's not an emergency, but good to have it checked sometime soon, so the vet can determine what type of tumor it is and if it needs to be removed.

This looks like a possible mass that has a really good blood supply or even a blood blister. I would try applying a cold compress on it for 5-10 minutes, if a vet is not readily available. If you can get the bleeding to stop tonight I would leave it be for now and then get this checked in the morning by your vet if possible. However if you cannot get the bleeding to stop even after the cold compress and perhaps even placing a make-shift wrap around it, then an ER vet visit has to be considered to stabilize the area. However, an ER vet visit is usually only needed if it is gushing blood, for fear or too much blood loss. If it is oozing then it likely can wait until morning before seeking veterinary assistance. Without further testing, there is no way to tell if this growth is due to infection, trauma or allergy, or if it is a tumour. Tumours can be of a malignant (cancerous) type that can spread elsewhere and/ or invade the healthy tissue around them, or a more benign (noncancerous) type that is unlikely to spread. I recommend making an appointment to see your vet to have the growth tested. In many cases this can be done using a fine needle aspirate, where cells are removed from the growth using a needle and examined under a microscope to determine what it is and to guide treatment. In some cases further testing may be needed to determine the necessary course of treatment, but it is important to get new growths tested in a timely manner, as some can be cancerous and quite aggressive in their growth, and growths due to infection, allergy or trauma can lead to complications or be indicators of underlying health problems. In the meantime, it is very important that you keep Trey from licking the area to help prevent infection by making sure he wears the “cone” (also known as an e-collar or Elizabethan collar) at all times when he is not being directly supervised by you, including while sleeping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. I am so sorry to hear about Tilly. Unfortunately with many of these tumors surgical removal is the only way to fix the problem. If that isn't an option right now, in some instances depending on type of tumor placing the pet on prednisone may decrease the size but can have negative side effects (panting, increases urinating). Another consideration if the tumor is bleeding is a traditional Chinese medicine called Yunnan Baiyao. I would ask your vet if these are options for your dog.

This mass certainly looks concerning. As it is growing, there is a suspicion that it is likely a malignant mass. I suggest you schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam and a so-called Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) where your veterinarian takes a small amount of tissue from the mass with a fine needle. This is usually not painful and will help determine the type of mass and whether it needs to be removed surgically.

Sorry to hear that Didis is having these issues. Based on the photo, that appears to be some sort of mass that is now ulcerating. The area should be treated as if it were an open wound that is infected, and thus, she should be receiving antibiotics orally. The only way to obtain these will be with a veterinary examination and a prescription. If this is not possible, the best thing you can do is shave the hair that is surrounding the lesion, scrub the area with dilute betadine or chlorhexidine, and keep it as clean as possible. You can also apply something topically to the lesion such as triple antibiotic, though his may or may not be effective. Do not bandage or cover the area, as this will only serve to trap bacteria into the area. Hope this helps.

That area could be a ruptured abscess, a ruptured cyst or the previous home of a worm larvae. You can continue treating it like you are. Make sure Eleven wears and elizabethan collar at all times to prevent any licking which could make it worse.
