My Rottweiler puppy has blue eyes. Will they change or is it a health issue?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 5 days old | 10 lbs

I recently went to see a rottweiler puppy that is 6 weeks old. I noticed that the puppy had blue eyes even though both parent (purebred rottweilers) had brown-dark brown eyes. I know that blue eyes are not part of the CKC or AKA rottweiler standard. Should I be concerned about the health of this puppy or is it natural for puppies to have eye colour changes throughout their development?

Many puppies have lighter colored eyes that will change as they age. It's likely his eyes will change as well. Blue eyes can occur through random mutations so there is a possibility the eyes will remain blue but that would be uncommon. I hope this helps.

Just like human babies all puppies and kittens have blue eyes. Some breeds will have blue eyes. Based on the pictured puppy's color pattern it is very possible that this puppy with have blue eyes or two different colored eyes. It would be helpful to know the breed, husky's and Australian Shepherds can have blue eyes. Only time will tell though!

It takes about 10- 12 weeks for a puppy's eye color to become permanent but it can take as long as 16 weeks. Some Huskies do indeed have very dark eyes, so it's possible that Esco's eyes may stay this color. If they do end up changing, this will usually happen by 12-16 weeks of age. It's hard to say what color they might change to - this is unpredictable, just like it is in people :) In my experience, golden-yellow or blue eyes are most common in Huskies.

My Shih Tzu puppy has a blue ring around its eye. Is this normal?

Most puppies have blue eyes when they are extremely young. It can take some time for all of the pigment to show up in puppies and change their eyes from the "puppy blue" to their permanent color. If the puppy was older than 8 weeks and there is only one blue eye, then this could be a sign of a problem. If you are referring to the blue line around the brown iris color and the white of his eye, it may be a deposit of cholesterol or normal for a puppy Rocky's age. If he isn't squinting or rubbing his eyes then have your Vet take a closer look at his next puppy visit. Cholesterol deposits usually are not harmful. I hope this helps!

Puppies vision develops gradually between 2 - 7 weeks of age and it is very hard to tell at this age how this will improve, The eyes do appear a little hazy and I recommend a vet check to rule out any infectious or inflammatory cause which may improve with treatment. Conjunctivitis, ulcers and certain viral infections can cause 'blue eye' and a full health check is recommended

My newborn puppy's eyes just opened and look black. Is this normal?

Eye color in puppies this young can be very variable, sometimes appearing completely black when first opening. The eye color is likely to change as they grow older and into their own. As long as you do not see any discharge or cloudiness associated with the eyes, the color should not be something to be concerned with. Just make sure all the other puppy's eyes are opening relatively soon and look relatively normal. Good luck with your pups!

We see mixed color irises in dogs all of the time and as far as I know, it doesn't raise any questions in my mind regarding those pets and there health or behavior.
