My puppy has a blue ring around his eyes. Should I be worried?

Heterochromia in dogs means the dog has two different colored eyes. This is usually no cause for concern unless there is an underlying medical condition. Luna's eyes are the same color. The blue ring you are seeing on or near the margin between Luna's iris (the colored part of the eye) and the sclera (white part) is likely no cause for concern in the absence of other symptoms (redness, swelling discharge, pawing at the eye/face). https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/heterochromia/

Most puppies have blue eyes when they are extremely young. It can take some time for all of the pigment to show up in puppies and change their eyes from the "puppy blue" to their permanent color. If the puppy was older than 8 weeks and there is only one blue eye, then this could be a sign of a problem. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see that the iris is partially blue at the bottom. I can't tell if that means she has a partially blue and brown eye (some breeds can have this normally) or there is something wrong with the eye. Since she is 8 weeks old and likely heading to the Vet soon for vaccines have the confirm that the blue color is a normal variation of her iris color. The white structure in the corner of her eye is normal, it is the 3rd eyelid membrane. I hope this helps and I wish you and Athena the best!

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. He's a cutie! From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

We see mixed color irises in dogs all of the time and as far as I know, it doesn't raise any questions in my mind regarding those pets and there health or behavior. Sometimes there are changes in pigmentation in that region of the eye which are not considered abnormal especially if not bothering the patient. Good luck and have a good night!

This may be due to an infection, inflammation, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to actually look at the lesion and determine what would be best to treat this with. Best of luck!
