Why does my puppy's urine smell acidic? What could be the cause?

Actually your dog's urinalysis looks very good. There are various reasons for a dog's urine to become alkaline (pH greater than If the urine has been retained in the bladder for too long, it becomes stale. Also, if the urine has been standing too long, ie was not fresh. Contamination with detergent from a collecting bottle that was not rinsed well. Contaminated with ammonia Conditions that can cause alkaline urine: Urinary tract infection with urease-positive bacteria - most common cause (likely not in your case) Persistent vomiting - due to loss of gastric acid. (is your dog vomiting a lot?) Respiratory alkalosis and some other conditions which are rare. If your dog is taking medications, it can cause alkaline urine: e.g. acetazolamide, thiazide diuretics, potassium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium lactate And finally, Special diets formulated to produce an alkaline urine eg Hill's Precription Diet Canine u/d Alkaline urine can cause kidney and bladder stones. I suggest you have your vet check the pH of your dogs urine again, this time with fresh urine won shortly before testing.

Unfortunately the concerns is that there may be a urinary tract infection which needs to be treated with antibiotics. I recommend to get her into see the veterinarian and have her urine checked for infection or crystals as these can commonly show up like this. Sometimes very concentrated urine can smell stronger and in that instance, you want to increase the drinking. This can be achieved by adding water to the food but it sounds like she is already drinking a lot. Play it safe and have her urine checked to be sure. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! First of all, if you haven’t yet, see your vet for a urinalysis because a UTI can change the smell and increase pH of the urine. Obviously, antibiotics are the way to fix that problem. If you’ve been to the vet and there was not bacteria in the urine- just a change in pH, then you can consider a urinary supplement like UT Strength which can help acidify urine. Poor Kai! There could be a urine infection or crystals in the urine. Certain toxins can also cause this as well. I recommend to have him examined by the Veterinarian today. Try to collect a sample of that urine with a syringe to take to the appointment. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

She lkely has a urinary tract infection. This causes pets to pee often and can also their urine to smell fishy or foul in odor. I would recommend taking Rosie to your vet soon to have her urine tested so that she can get the appropriate antibiotic treatment soon to get this resolved. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Sometimes more concentrated urine can have a stronger odor. I would make sure he is drinking plenty of water and not dehydrating himself. If he has been drinking adequate amounts of water and if the smell continues, I would get him examined by his veterinarian and have his urine tested as he may be dealing with a urinary tract infection.
