My cat has alkaline urine and strong, smelly pee. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old

What can I do for my child's alkaline urine? Still voiding well, but I've noticed a change in the smell of his urine. And he drinks plenty since they all have a water fountain.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

First of all, if you haven’t yet, see your vet for a urinalysis because a UTI can change the smell and increase pH of the urine. Obviously, antibiotics are the way to fix that problem.

If you’ve been to the vet and there was not bacteria in the urine- just a change in pH, then you can consider a urinary supplement like UT Strength which can help acidify urine. There are also prescription and non-prescription diets that achieve this purpose as well.

Best of luck to you and Chance

Urine sample seems normal at the moment a part from PH. There is no inflammation (which is the most important thing to rule out).
I would keep monitoring him at this stage and make sure he keeps urinating but I would not recommend to change diet or treat at this stage.
