My dog's urine smells like ammonia. Could her diet be the cause?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

I have a 9 year old female collie mix who’s urine seems to be smelling a little stronger of ammonia or something of the sort. She is not showing any signs of discomfort, loss of appetite, or lack of energy! Her dog food is Instinct, the chicken recipe for adults. Could this be a diet issue?

Hello. It is possible, but not something that I would be overly concerned about. If it continues to be an issue, or any other signs of urinary discomfort occur ( straining, licking, staining around the vulva, increased thirst or increased need to urinate ) please see your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
