Why is my puppy having toilet training accidents after neutering?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 months and 12 days old | 8 lbs

Our 8month puppy had the snip 6 days ago. His toilet training was almost perfect before and now he has started having accidents. Is this normal?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Yes, this can be normal after neutering surgery. It has to do with the drop in hormone levels after the surgery and that has some effect on bladder control. Fortunately, this can be treated with medication if the accidents continue and do not get better. You may wan to visit with your veterinarian soon regarding medication if he does not improve soon.

Thanks again for your post and best of luck to you and Bruno!
