My puppy poops too much, is thin, and always hungry. Is his food okay?

Growing puppies need a lot of calories, and I do recommend feeding at least three times a day at this age. It is normal for them to poop 3 or even 4 or 5 times a day! As long as the stool is solid and well formed, this is perfectly normal. Every dog has a slightly different metabolism. If you are feeding the recommended amount on the bag, that is a good place to start. Over the next month you will want to watch his weight. If he seems to be developing fat rolls over this neck and shoulders, you might want to cut back a little. If he is becoming thin and you can see his ribs or hips, then increase the amount. You may have to increase or decrease his food over time as he continues to grow.

Frequent bowel movements are not necessarily abnormal. They should have a firm consistency, and not be like diarrhea. I would recommend that you have him on a large breed puppy food to help support his rapidly growing bones. You can try a different brand of food and see if that helps decrease the stool frequency.

Yes it is likely the extra fiber. No worries here whatsoever. Some puppies do poop quite a bit and 2-3 times a day is normal as long as the poop is solid. It likely is his diet. A lot of the holistic or grain free diets can cause excessive stool production. It isn't something that is a medical concern however, especially i the stools are normal consistency. Perhaps you can let him stay outside for a longer period of time so that he is allowed to completely empty his colon before coming back in. Otherwise, just keep an eye on Asian and I hope that he continues to do well. If his stools do change in consistency or have visible worms, then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. No he's perfect. We are getting used to many dogs and cats being fat. His coat is shiny, he has a good waist and there is plenty of muscle over his spine. It does sound like he poops more than normal. I would try a higher calorie food. There may be excessive fiber in the food you are feeding causing that much poop. Gradually mix the new food with the old one over a week or so to prevent stomach upset. I'm pleased to see such a fit, active dog. Your puppy is still very young. Usually mommy would still clean him up. It is normal for small puppies to pass stool right after eating. It is also normal to pass stool 7-8 times a day. This will get less as your puppy gets older. He should be fed canned puppy food (specifically for puppies!) for large breed puppies. You can slowly transition him from the wet puppy food to dry puppy food when the puppy is about 8 weeks old. You should feed your puppy 3-4 times daily.

Sometimes puppies will defecate more frequently if they are excited. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buzoo's bowel movements - he should be seen by a vet if you notice that the stool is loose, has mucus or blood in it, or begins vomiting.
